Quantum Field Theory on Curved Spacetimes

Quantum Field Theory on Curved Spacetimes PDF Author: Christian Bär
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642027806
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 167

Book Description
After some decades of work a satisfactory theory of quantum gravity is still not available; moreover, there are indications that the original field theoretical approach may be better suited than originally expected. There, to first approximation, one is left with the problem of quantum field theory on Lorentzian manifolds. Surprisingly, this seemingly modest approach leads to far reaching conceptual and mathematical problems and to spectacular predictions, the most famous one being the Hawking radiation of black holes. Ingredients of this approach are the formulation of quantum physics in terms of C*-algebras, the geometry of Lorentzian manifolds, in particular their causal structure, and linear hyperbolic differential equations where the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem plays a distinguished role, as well as more recently the insights from suitable concepts such as microlocal analysis. This primer is an outgrowth of a compact course given by the editors and contributing authors to an audience of advanced graduate students and young researchers in the field, and assumes working knowledge of differential geometry and functional analysis on the part of the reader.

Distributions

Distributions PDF Author: J.J. Duistermaat
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0817646752
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 455

Book Description
This textbook is an application-oriented introduction to the theory of distributions, a powerful tool used in mathematical analysis. The treatment emphasizes applications that relate distributions to linear partial differential equations and Fourier analysis problems found in mechanics, optics, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and signal analysis. The book is motivated by many exercises, hints, and solutions that guide the reader along a path requiring only a minimal mathematical background.

Huygens' Principle and Hyperbolic Equations

Huygens' Principle and Hyperbolic Equations PDF Author: Gunther Paul
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483262227
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 908

Book Description
Huygens' Principle and Hyperbolic Equations is devoted to certain mathematical aspects of wave propagation in curved space-times. The book aims to present special nontrivial Huygens' operators and to describe their individual properties and to characterize these examples of Huygens' operators within certain more or less comprehensive classes of general hyperbolic operators. The materials covered in the book include a treatment of the wave equation for p-forms over a space of constant sectional curvature, the Riesz distributions, the Euler-Poisson-Darboux-equations over a Riemannian manifold, and plane wave manifolds. Physicists will find the book invaluable.

Orthogonal Polynomials

Orthogonal Polynomials PDF Author: Géza Freud
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 148315940X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 295

Book Description
Orthogonal Polynomials contains an up-to-date survey of the general theory of orthogonal polynomials. It deals with the problem of polynomials and reveals that the sequence of these polynomials forms an orthogonal system with respect to a non-negative m-distribution defined on the real numerical axis. Comprised of five chapters, the book begins with the fundamental properties of orthogonal polynomials. After discussing the momentum problem, it then explains the quadrature procedure, the convergence theory, and G. Szego's theory. This book is useful for those who intend to use it as reference for future studies or as a textbook for lecture purposes

Wave Equations on Lorentzian Manifolds and Quantization

Wave Equations on Lorentzian Manifolds and Quantization PDF Author: Christian Bär
Publisher: European Mathematical Society
ISBN: 9783037190371
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
This book provides a detailed introduction to linear wave equations on Lorentzian manifolds (for vector-bundle valued fields). After a collection of preliminary material in the first chapter, one finds in the second chapter the construction of local fundamental solutions together with their Hadamard expansion. The third chapter establishes the existence and uniqueness of global fundamental solutions on globally hyperbolic spacetimes and discusses Green's operators and well-posedness of the Cauchy problem. The last chapter is devoted to field quantization in the sense of algebraic quantum field theory. The necessary basics on $C^*$-algebras and CCR-representations are developed in full detail. The text provides a self-contained introduction to these topics addressed to graduate students in mathematics and physics. At the same time, it is intended as a reference for researchers in global analysis, general relativity, and quantum field theory.
