Book Description
Excerpt from Rich Relatives It may have been that the porter at York railway station was irritated by Sunday duty, or it may have been that the outward signs of wealth in his client were not conspicuous; whatever the cause, he spoke rudely to her. Yet Jasmine Grant was not a figure that ought to have aroused the insolence of a porter, even if he was on Sunday duty. To be sure, her black clothes were not fashionable; and a journey from the South of Italy to the North of England, having obliterated what slight pretensions to cut they might once have possessed, had left her definitely draggled. Although the news of having to wait nearly five hours for the train to Spaborough had brought tears of disappointment into her eyes, and although the appeal of tears had been spoilt by their being rubbed off with the back of a dusty glove, Jasmine's beauty was there all the time - a dark, Southern beauty of jetty lashes curling away from brown eyes starry-hearted; a slim Southern charm of sunburnt, boyish hands. Something she had of a young cypress in moonlight, something of a violoncello, with that voice as deep as her eyes. But for the porter she was only something of a nuisance, and when she began to lament again the long wait he broke in as rudely as before: "Now it's not a bit of good you nagging at me, miss. If the 4.42 goes at 4.42, I can't make it go before 4.42, can I?" Then perhaps the thought of his own daughters at home, or perhaps the comforting intuition that there would be shrimps for tea at the close of this weary day, stirred his better nature. Book Description
Excerpt from A Rich Man's Relatives, Vol. 2 of 3 Along the dusty road came sounds of wheels, the wheels of the Misses Stanleys' home-going guests. The sound spread far and wide across the humid air which sublimated it into something above the common daylight noise, rasping and jarring against stones and gravel, into a rumbling half musical with sug gestive echoes reverberating through the stillness. Out of the gate they came, those vehicles, along the road, around the corner where Bruneau's cottage stood, and down towards the village shrouded in gathering obscurity, with the twinkle of a candle scattered through it here and there in rivalry Of the fire - flies in the bushes nearer hand, but far less brilliant. The vehicles rumbled and disappeared, and the echoes Of their wheels died out as rip ples die on the surface Of a stagnant pool; and the road was left alone to night and silence. Book Description
Excerpt from Rich Man's Relatives, Vol. 3 of 3 The business, however, appeared to have come to a stop no one spoke, and each looked at his neighbour, while the vice-president moved restlessly in his chair, and twiddled his watch chain with uneasy fingers. He coughed, cleared his voice, lifted his eye-glass to his eyes, and let it drop, but still he said nothing, while Ralph looked inquiringly round the board. Several ledgers had been brought in from the bank and lay upon the table, every one open at the page headed, Ralph Herkimer Son; and while he waited, a clerk entered with yet another, containing some further variety of information which he laid before the chairman, opening it and officiously pointing out the desired record, then looking up as he turned to withdraw, his eyes lighted on the president himself, when a guilty flush and a deprecatory glance betrayed that the in formation he had been presenting bore upon the same point as the rest. Excerpt from Riches Without Wings, or the Cleveland Family All respond to the sentiment, sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof yet all enhance the evils of to-day, by anticipa tions of the marrow - bringing the possible ills of the future, to aggravate the trials of the present. Thus the sorrows to which flesh is heir, meted out gently, as we are able to beat them, are by man's perver sity too often viewed in the mass, till his weak spirit sinks at the prospect. The quotation has become trite, Man wants but little here below, Nor wants that little long. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
