Book Description
Alphabet rhymes have been enjoyed for as long as parents and teachers have sat down with children to teach them their ABC. A Was Once an Apple-Pie by Edward Lear was first published in 1871 and was one of the first books to take a lighter approach to learning. The artist Rosalind Beardshaw has perfectly caught Lear's delicious sense of humour in his mischievous Alphabet. The Shaker Abecedarious was first published in 1882 and was designed to make reading instruction more enjoyable by introducing rhythm and rhyme. Jan Barger has brought style and simplicity to this wonderful work. A Was an Archer Tom Thumb's Picture Alphabet is actually based on a political rhyme published around 1701. Tiphanie Beeke's beautiful and delicate collage work perfectly complements this curious ABC. An Alphabet of Nursery Rhymes. Specially selected for this book these rhymes have been illustrated with fun and energy by Lynne Chapman. 100 Nineteenth-century Rhyming Alphabets in English, from the Library of Ruth M. Baldwin

100 Nineteenth-century Rhyming Alphabets in English, from the Library of Ruth M. Baldwin PDF Author: Ruth Marie Baldwin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
The library of Ruth M. Baldwin contains, at the present time, about 35,000titles and editions of children's books in English, all before 1900and mostly from the nineteenth century. Though a small part of the outpouring of children's books in English in the nineteenth century--estimated to be as much as a quarter of a million volumes--her library is probably unique in its equal representation of American and English children's books. How many of the books published were rhyming alphabets is difficult to say. These hundred books presented here, certainly a small part of the whole, bear publication dates around the early part of the second half of the century, and represent the whole century well, for true children's book publishing did not precede this by much. Children and readers in general as well as students of children's literature should find this book of books interesting. The alphabets reproduced here are included in their entirety, many of them in color, and are grouped thematically under such topics as nature, animals, and farm life.
