Ecology
Author: Hermann Remmert
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642676359
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 290
Book Description
The wealth of the natural sciences no longer consists in the abundance of facts, but in the way they are linked together. ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT There is no dearth of books on ecology. Why write yet another? Each person is different, and each views the problems in a different way. Each emphasizes different aspects and describes them in a different style. When I was a student I often found certain books more helpful than others, and I still think it is useful to have a variety of presentations from which to choose. This variety also allows the student to appreciate the diversity within the field of ecology. I have devoted considerable effort to making this book readable. Throughout I have refrained from using specialized terminology - thus also avoiding the problem that many terms are used differently in the various areas of ecology. Straightforward English is quite sufficient to describe complicated situations. Furthermore, precisely defined terms are usually associated with detailed quantitative descriptions, whereas we are concerned with a general understanding of the dynamics of ecology. For similar reasons I have tried to rely as little as possible on mathematical discussions. All too often, in recent years, people have overlooked the fact that mathematics - like language - can give only a description, albeit an especially precise one.

New Zealand Journal of Zoology
Pamphlets on Parasitology
Treatise on Zoology - Anatomy, Taxonomy, Biology. The Myriapoda, Volume 1
Author: Alessandro Minelli
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004188266
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 546
Book Description
Myriapods are the only major zoological group for which a modern encyclopedic treatment has never been produced. In particular, this was the single major gap in the largest zoological treatise of the XIX century (Grassé’s Traité de Zoologie), whose publication has recently been stopped. The two volumes of “The Myriapoda” fill that gap with an updated treatment in the English language. Volume I opens with an introductory treatment of myriapod affinities and phylogeny. The following chapters are mostly devoted to the Chilopoda or centipedes, extensively treated from the point of view of external and internal morphology, physiology, reproduction, development, distribution, ecology, phylogeny and taxonomy. All currently recognized suprageneric and generic taxa are considered. Additional chapters deal with the two smaller myriapod classes, the Symphyla and the Pauropoda. All groups and features are extensively illustrated by line drawings and micrographs and living specimens of representative species of the main groups are presented in color photographs.

Key to Parasitic Nematodes
Author: Skryabin
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004630430
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1109
Book Description
This final volume in the treatise Keys to Parastic Nematodes is devoted to the characters of five suborders of nematodes, compiled by five specialists. Suborder Trichocephalata and Diotophymata were compiled by K.I. Skryabin and N.P. Shikhobalova, and Rhabditata and Tylenchata by A.A. Sobolev and A.A. Paramonov. A.A. Sobolev analyzed the material on Camallanta, while V.E. Sudarikov compiled the chapter on the distribution of all known nematodes in different hosts recorded thus far, for all four volumes of this key. The importance of this volume is enhanced further by the most comprehensive index of animal hosts of all known parasitic nematodes reviewed. This comprehensive work is the first of its kind in helminthological literature; this type of treatise has never before been published in any country to date.
