En g'n'ral, les musiciens qui 'crivent n'ont point assez de notions de la philosophie de leur art; mais les 'crivains raisonneur's manquent presque tous de savoir pratique. Il faut bien que je l'avoue d's le d'but de l'analyse du livre de M. Marx sur la com'position cette exp'rience, ce got sr d'une plume savante dans les combinaisons de l'harmonie et du contre - point, je ne les ai pas trouv's dans les exemples qu'il a 'crits l'appui de ses raisonnements. Ceux qu'il a choisis dans les oeuvres de j.-s. Bach, son musicien de pr'dilection ne sont pas toujours ce qu'il au rait fallu prendre, parce qu'ils sont 'galement r'pr'hen sibles sous le rapport de la puret' d'harmonie et-sons celui de la tonalit'. Mod'le admirable de sentiment, de grandeur dans la pens'e, et d'esprit de combinaison, Bach jetait souvent avec profusion les incorrections d'harmonie dans ses compositions instrumentales, parce qu'il les ex'cutait dans des mouvements tr's rapides qui les rendaient presque insensibles l'oreille et n'en laissaient apercevoir que le mouvement original. Mais pr'sent'es comme des exemples d'harmonie, ces incorrections choquent l'oeil et ne peuvent qu''garer les commenants. Bach est donc de tous les coma positeurs celui dont les ouvrages peuvent le moins fournir d''l'ments pour un trait' didactique, parce qu'il faudrait un long commentaire sur chaque passage.
