The Oxford Handbook of Mission Studies

The Oxford Handbook of Mission Studies PDF Author: Kirsteen Kim
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198831722
Category : Missions
Languages : en
Pages : 769

Book Description
The Oxford Handbook of Mission Studies represents more than a century of scholarship related to the theology, history, and methodology of the propagation of Christian faith and the engagement of Christians with cultures, religions, and societies worldwide. It contains more than 40 articles by experts from different disciplinary and ecclesial perspectives, who are from all continents. It not only offers a broad overview of key approaches and issues in mission studies but it also highlights current trends and suggests future developments. The Handbook builds on renewed interest in mission studies this century generated by recent key statements on mission from ecumenical, evangelical, Catholic, and Orthodox sources, and by a spate of academic works on the topic. Western church leaders now apply insights from foreign missions (such as, inculturation, liberation, interfaith work, and power encounter) to today's multicultural societies. Meanwhile, there are new initiatives in mission from the Majority World, where most Christians live, so that sending is not only 'from the west to the rest' but 'from everywhere to everywhere'. Therefore, this volume aims to reflect the voices of the receivers of mission as well as its protagonists and to raise awareness of new movements. In a time of growing recognition of 'religions' more generally, this work examines and theorizes the missional dimensions of the world's largest religion: its agendas, growth, outreach, role in public life, effect on cultures, relevance for development, and its approaches to other communities.

Jesus Christ Today

Jesus Christ Today PDF Author: Stuart G. Hall
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110212773
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 397

Book Description
Jesus of Nazareth is a perennial subject of interest, and one of the most influential people that ever lived. The religious movement which flowed from him produced the Christian Church in all its various manifestations. Christian believers have in common a regard for Jesus as Lord and God, in some way a bodily appearance revealing the Father of the universe. Christian thinkers down the centuries have continually tried to define and explain who Jesus was and is. This book draws together some of the best modern thinking about the biblical evidence, the beliefs of the first few centuries when “orthodoxy” was being defined, the past two centuries when churchmen have responded to the challenge of modern rationalism, and some of the reactions to Jesus in the world-wide spread of modern Christianity and in Islam. It concludes with an attempt at a simple formula which might provoke and sustain faith in Jesus Christ in the most recent intellectual environment.

The Ink of the Scholars

The Ink of the Scholars PDF Author: Bachir Diagne
Publisher: African Books Collective
ISBN: 286978743X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
What are the issues discussed today by African philosophers? Four important topics are identified here as important objects of philosophical reflection on the African continent. One is the question of ontology in relation to African religions and aesthetics. Another is the question of time and, in particular, of prospective thinking and development. A third issue is the task of reconstructing the intellectual history of the continent through the examination of the question of orality but also by taking into account the often neglected tradition of written erudition in Islamic centres of learning. Timbuktu is certainly the most important and most famous of such intellectual centres. The fourth question concerns political philosophy: the concept of African socialisms is revisited and the march that led to the adoption of the African Charter of Human and Peoples Rights is examined. All these important issues are also fundamental to understanding the question of African languages and translation.

Between Educationalization and Appropriation

Between Educationalization and Appropriation PDF Author: Marc Depaepe
Publisher: Leuven University Press
ISBN: 9058679179
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 497

Book Description
Developments in educational systems worldwide have largely contributed to the modernization and globalization of present-day society. However, in order to fully understand their impact, educational systems must be interpreted against a background of particular situations and contexts. This textbook brings together more than twenty (collaborative) contributions focusing on the two key themes in the work of Marc Depaepe: educationalization and appropriation. Compiled for his international master classes, these selected writings provide not only a thorough introduction to the history of modern educational systems, but also a twenty-five-year overview of the work of a well-known pioneer in the field of history of education. Covering the modernization of schooling in Western history, the characteristics and origins of educationalization, the colonial experience in education, and the process of "appropriation," Between Educationalization and Appropriation will be of great interest to a larger audience of scholars in the social sciences.

The Spiritual in the Secular

The Spiritual in the Secular PDF Author: Patrick Harries
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 1467435856
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 358

Book Description
David Livingstone's visit to Cambridge in 1857 was seen as much as a scientific event as a religious one. But he was by no means alone among missionaries in integrating mission with science and other fields of research. Rather, many missionaries were remarkable, pioneering polymaths. This collection of essays explores the ways in which late-nineteenth- and twentieth-century missionaries to Africa contributed to various academic disciplines, such as linguistics, ethnography, social anthropology, zoology, medicine, and many more. This volume includes an introductory chapter by the editors and eleven chapters that analyze missionary research and its impact on knowledge about African contexts. Several themes emerge, including many missionaries' positive views of indigenous discourses and the complicated relationship between missionaries and professional anthropologists.
