Book Description
Excerpt from Introduction to the Analytical and Practical Grammar of the English Language: With Exercises in Analysis and Parsing In presenting this revised edition of the "Introduction to Bullion's Analytical and Practical Grammar," the Editor would remark that, while in simplicity of style and arrangement, suitableness and fulness of practical exercises, and general completeness, Bullions' Grammars cannot easily be surpassed, it has been generally felt among teachers, that considerable improvement might be made in the wording of many of the definitions and rules, and in the treatment of some important branches of the subject. In making alterations, however, it has been an object steadily kept in view, to disturb as little as possible the general features of the book, and yet to make such changes as would remove inaccuracies, supply deficiencies and render it more generally acceptable and serviceable to Canadian teachers. Special attention has been directed to the Infinitive and Participle; - a new rule accompanied by illustrations and explanations has been given for the construction of each. Considerable care, also, has been taken to present "shall" and "will" in their proper relation and use in the conjugation of the verb. Many of the Rules of Syntax have been changed, and important additions made to the exercises on most of the lessons. The selections in prose and poetry taken from the "Progressive Exercises in Analysis and Parsing," which have been appended, will add greatly to the value of the book, as it does away with the necessity and inconvenience which has hitherto existed, of introducing the "Progressive Exercises," in connection with the Grammar at an additional expense of almost as much as the grammar itself. As to the best method of using the book, every experienced teacher will himself be the best judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Miller's Analytical and Practical Grammar of the English Language: On the Basis of Bullions, Containing, in Addition to Other New Matter, a Full Course of Analysis, Examination Questions and Exercises on Each Topio; Diagrams for Exercises on the Verb; Form for Exercises in Analysis; A Section on the Structure of Words; A We have reason to congratulate ourselves, that in most depart ments of study, Canadian Schools are now supplied with excellent text books, many of them prepared in the country by Canadian Teachers. In the department of English Grammar, however, it is scarcely necessary to say, that among all classes of teachers the utmost dissatisfaction is felt. It is the peculiarity of almost every English Grammar in use that, while they may be very good, or even excellent, in some department of the subject, they either entirely omit others of, at least, equal importance, or are so inaccurate, or meagre, or behind the times, in the manner of treating them, that, in many cases, it would be be better had they been altogether passed over. The consequence is, that a teacher who would make his course of instruction comprehend what is necessary to render it practically useful and give it a degree of completeness, is compelled, either to depend on oral instruction to supplement the deficiencies of the text book, or to submit to the inconvenience and needless expense of introducing several dfi'er ent books. To this, more than any other cause, is, doubtless, to be attributed the fact, that the study of English Grammar does not occupy that position in our schools to which its importance entitles it. Whatever Opinion, therefore, may be entertained of the pretensions of the text book now presented, of this, at all events, the editor is fully assured, that both teachers and pupils will appreciate the attempt to render their labour in this department somewhat more pleasant and remunerative, and will cheerfully recognise whatever merit it may possess. In undertaking the revision of Bullions' Analytical and Frac tical Grammar, the intention, in the first place, was merely to correct some of the numerous inaccuracies, and supply a few of its worst defects; but the more closely it was examined with a view to this, in the light of the latest improvements in the mode of treating and presenting the subject, the more obvious it became, that such superficial changes, so far from satisfying the4 introduction TO second canadian edition.
