Book Description
The British musical in its formative years has appeared in strikingly different guises: from the lasting hits of Oliver!, and Me and My Girl, to the successes of The Dancing Years, Bless the Bride and Expresso Bongo. This authoritative study traces what made these shows successes in the West End and how their qualities define a uniquely British interpretation of the genre. Cultural, sociological and political influences entwine with close reading of the dramatic and musical elements of this repertory to reveal a fascinating web of connections and contrasts between the times, the shows and the people who made them. Through detailed case studies, such as of The Boy Friend and Bitter Sweet, the rich individuality of each West End work is spotlighted, posing vital questions and intriguing answers as to what a British musical can be. Interdisciplinary in nature, this study brings together all the core materials to discover this period in the story of the British musical. Reviewing the Situation is insightful and lively, an invaluable resource for students and scholars of musical theatre and all those theatregoers drawn to the power of these classic British shows.

Reviewing the South

Reviewing the South PDF Author: Sarah Gardner
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 110850096X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
The American South received increased attention from national commentators during the interwar era. Beginning in the 1920s, the proliferation of daily book columns and Sunday book supplements in newspapers reflected a growing audience of educated readers and its demand for books and book reviews. This period of intensified scrutiny coincided with a boom in the publishing industry, which, in turn, encouraged newspapers to pay greater attention to the world of books. Reviewing the South shows how northern critics were as much involved in the Southern Literary Renaissance as Southern authors and critics. Southern writing, Gardner argues, served as a litmus to gauge Southern exceptionalism. For critics and their readers, nothing less than the region's ability to contribute to the vibrancy and growth of the nation was at stake.

Gravity at the International Criminal Court

Gravity at the International Criminal Court PDF Author: Priya Urs
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198882971
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
The gravity of a crime or case features in various international and national legal frameworks for the investigation and prosecution of international crimes. At the International Criminal Court (ICC), 'sufficient gravity' is a requirement for the admissibility of a case specified in Article 17(1)(d) of the Rome Statute. The open-textured nature of the provision leaves the manner of its application and, ultimately, its purpose in the context of the Prosecutor's decisions whether to investigate and prosecute, open to discussion. Set against the backdrop of ongoing debates on how to justify selective investigations and prosecutions at the Court, Gravity at the International Criminal Court: Admissibility and Prosecutorial Discretion addresses the question of how the gravity criterion is to be applied in the context of the Prosecutor's respective decisions whether to investigate and prosecute. It argues that the purpose of the gravity criterion in this context is the allocation of investigative and prosecutorial resources. First, identifying appropriate indicators of gravity, the book contends that the application of Article 17(1)(d) requires a subjective assessment that involves the exercise of discretion. Second, by clarifying the respective roles of the Prosecutor and the Pre-Trial Chambers of the Court in the assessment of gravity in different contexts, it argues in favour of wide prosecutorial discretion in the making of this assessment compared with the limited powers of judicial oversight conferred on the Pre-Trial Chamber. Timely and thorough, Gravity at the International Criminal Court proposes a more coherent and persuasive application of the criterion, contextualizing and comparing the ICC's approach in relation to other courts and bodies of law including international human rights law, international investment law, and international trade law.
