Review of Soils Design Construction and Performance Observations, Algiers Lock, Louisiana
Author: ARMY ENGINEER WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION VICKSBURG MISS.
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 63
Book Description
Algiers Lock is located in Orleans Parish, La., on the west side of the Mississippi River about 7 miles southeast of New Orleans. The purpose of the lock is to provide an alternate route for barge and small boat traffic between the Mississippi River and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway Canal and to relieve traffic congestion at Harvey Lock to the west. The lock is of a reinforced-concrete, U-frame-type construction with sector-type gates in each gate bay. The lock has a usable chamber width of 75 ft and length of 755 ft. Because of unfavorable foundation conditions, the lock was founded on wood piling which average between 50 and 55 ft in length. This report contains a summary of the soils and foundation studies made in connection with the design of the lock structure, pertinent features of construction, a review of the settlements and movements which have occurred during and after construction, conclusions and recommendations.

Book Description
The report is one of a number of similar reports on studies of the soils design, construction, and behavior of recently completed flood-control and navigation structures constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Lower Mississippi Valley Division. The purposes of these studies are to compare field experience and performance of the structures with design predictions, and from such comparisons and observations, to gain information and experience that will be useful in the design and construction of future projects in the Lower Mississippi Vallley Division. This report contains a brief review of the soils and foundation studies made in connection with the design of the overbank structure, a description of pertinent features of construction, an analysis and evaluation of observations made during and after construction, and conclusions and recommendations.
