This report reviews research literature pertaining to trust in automated systems. Based on the review, the report notes similarities with trust in the interpersonal domain as well as several unique dynamics & influences pertaining to trust in automated systems. Existing research has focussed primarily on trust in automation that has an executive or control function, and to a lesser extent considers trust in automation that is designed to present information to operators. Several models related to trust in automation have already been developed, and a comprehensive though preliminary model of trust in military automation is proposed. Sets of factors likely to impact the development of trust in automation are discussed, including properties of the automaton & of the operator, and properties of the context in which interaction with automation occurs. Based on the findings of the review, measures & methods to study trust in automation are considered and a program of research to study trust in automated systems is described.
