Book Description
Resonance Acoustic Spectroscopy deals with the analysis of waves generated in an elastic body by a plane harmonic acoustic wave. It is the first monograph to treat new analytical and experimental methods for the investigation of the excitation, propagation and re-radiation of elastic waves in solid, thick-walled and thin-walled elastic scatterers. The material is presented systematically, comprising the formulation of the problem, method of solution, algorithm, computation and analysis. A large number of computational results are given in the form of modal resonances, form functions, dispersion curves and acoustic spectrograms. Particular attention is paid to the interpretation of the solutions.

Nondestructive Evaluation of Inhomogeneous Cylindrical Components by Resonance Acoustic Spectroscopy

Book Description
This thesis investigates the potential application of a technique called Material Characterization by Resonance Acoustic Spectroscopy (MCRAS) for the purpose of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and on-line monitoring of inhomogeneous non-isotropic copper rods produced by the Ohno Continuous Casting (OCC) process. Experimental measurements of the scattered pressure fields are performed on copper samples with different levels of inhomogeneity by using the short-pulse Method of Isolation and Identification of Resonances (MIIR). Two distinct types of resonances have been observed from the experimental results. These resonances are proved to be useful in estimating the average material properties and grain sizes of the copper rods. It is concluded that MCRAS is a potentially powerful technique for non-destructive evaluation and on-line monitoring of inhomogeneous non-isotropic copper rods.

Book Description
Potential applications of resonance acoustic spectroscopy (RAS) for the purpose of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and on-line monitoring of isotropic clad rods and transversely isotropic cylinders are investigated in this thesis. Mathematical models are developed for the scattering of an infinite plane acoustic wave from infinite elastic and viscoelastic clad rods and infinite transversely isotropic cylinders. In these mathematical models, the scattered pressure field is obtained in terms of normal-mode Rayleigh series. Experimental measurements of the scattered pressure fields of various cylindrical components are performed using the short-pulse method of isolation and identification of resonances (MIIR). The method is applied to: copper-clad aluminum rods, Epon-815-clad steel rods, and fiber reinforced composite rods. The experimental results show good consistency with the results obtained from mathematical models. It is concluded that RAS is a potentially powerful technique for nondestructive evaluation and on-line monitoring of various cylindrical components.
