Book Description
The results of investigations of absorption and emission processes in gases important in upper atmosphere chemistry and physics by a wide variety of spectroscopic techniques are presented. The principle area studied is the vacuum ultraviolet at wavelength less than 3000 A using monochromators and spectrographs equipped with rare gas continua and hydrogen continua light sources. Sample cells suitable for work at 20K or between room temperature and 650K, gas chromatography apparatus for purifying samples, fluorescence apparatus to obtain the visible and ultraviolet emission spectra of gases excited by vacuum ultraviolet irradiation, an apparatus for flash photolysis studies, and data processing equipment are described. Experimental studies of the absorption spectrum of carbon suboxide, the fluorescence spectrum of the methoxyl radical, the flash photolysis of methyl nitrite and absorption and emission spectra of the products of a microwave discharge through sulfur dioxide are reported. Finally, theoretical calculations on the electronic structure of carbon dioxide and carbon suboxide are discussed. (Author).

ISBN: 0080543480
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
Techniques of Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectroscopy was first published in 1967. In the three decades since, the techniques associated with vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy have been greatly expanded. Originally published as two volumes in the serial "Experimental Methods in the Physical Sciences," Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectroscopy combines in one paperback volume information on the many advances in vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) research. In addition, the book provides students and researchers with concise reviews of the important aspects of designing experiments in the VUV region. This is the only comprehensive treatise describing the use of synchrotron and other light sources for research, along with the new technologies in optical elements, multilayers, mirror coatings, soft x-ray zone plates, VUV detectors, interferometric spectrometers, and subjects such as spectromicroscopy, lithography, and photon-induced fluorescence. Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectroscopy is an ideal handbook both for the beginner and for the experienced researcher in any field requiring the use of VUV radiation. Key Features* Detailed review of synchrotron radiation sources including undulators and wigglers* Comprehensive outline of monochromator design* Concise review of optics theory for multilayers, spectrometers, and zone plates* Information about other important VUV sources such as laser produced plasmas and Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) sources* Applications such as spectromicroscopy, lithography, and fluorescence

Book Description
This monograph reviews the recent progress in vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization and photodissociation processes. Photoionization, photoelectron, and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques have played an important role in revealing the photoionization and photodissociation dynamics of molecules in the vacuum ultraviolet region and in providing accurate energetic and spectroscopic information of ions as well as neutral molecules. The book represents the first detailed review of major experimental developments in the studies of single vacuum ultraviolet photon ionization and dissociation processes of gaseous molecules and clusters.
