The European Commission has recently launched the process of developing stricter emissions standards (post-Euro 6/VI) for all petrol and diesel cars, vans, lorries and buses. To ensure vehicles on European roads are clean over their lifetime, the proposed rules will consider new vehicle technologies and ensure emissions are measured on the road. The initiative is part of the European Green Deal and the European Union's (EU) commitment to accelerate the shift to sustainable and smart mobility. The main objective of this report is to contribute to the development of future European road vehicle emission standards by assessing the most relevant publicly funded research and innovation (R&I) projects and initiatives carried out in Europe after 2015. The assessment is largely based on the European Commission's Transport Research and Innovation Monitoring and Information System (TRIMIS) methodology for monitoring the progress of the Strategic Transport Research and Innovation Agenda (STRIA) roadmaps and analyses technology trends and R&I capacities in the European transport sector. The report provides a brief overview of the evolution of EU road vehicle pollutant emissions standards, a review of the most recent relevant research conducted at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), and an analysis of publicly funded R&I projects in Europe addressing vehicle emissions, including a qualitative analysis and an assessment of the main conclusions. It concludes by summarising the main findings and providing recommendations to policy makers.

The U.S. DRIVE (Driving Research and Innovation for Vehicle Efficiency and Energy Sustainability) vision, according to the charter of the Partnership, is this: American consumers have a broad range of affordable personal transportation choices that reduce petroleum consumption and significantly reduce harmful emissions from the transportation sector. Its mission is as follows: accelerate the development of pre-competitive and innovative technologies to enable a full range of efficient and clean advanced light-duty vehicles (LDVs), as well as related energy infrastructure. The Partnership focuses on precompetitive research and development (R&D) that can help to accelerate the emergence of advanced technologies to be commercialization-feasible. The guidance for the work of the U.S. DRIVE Partnership as well as the priority setting and targets for needed research are provided by joint industry/government technical teams. This structure has been demonstrated to be an effective means of identifying high-priority, long-term precompetitive research needs for each technology with which the Partnership is involved. Technical areas in which research and development as well as technology validation programs have been pursued include the following: internal combustion engines (ICEs) potentially operating on conventional and various alternative fuels, automotive fuel cell power systems, hydrogen storage systems (especially onboard vehicles), batteries and other forms of electrochemical energy storage, electric propulsion systems, hydrogen production and delivery, and materials leading to vehicle weight reductions.
