Book Description
Excerpt from Requirements of Electricity in Manufacturing Work Electric light may be supplied from the power mains or from separate generators, as conditions require. In not a few cases of the introduction of electric driving the additional saving has been more than enough to pay for all of the lighting ser vice. The cost of generating electric power can only be a deciding factor when the total cost of power required is large compared to the running expense. The saving in fuel depends upon the cost of fuel, the average load, the amount of shafting and belt ing displaced. Book Description
Excerpt from Power Requirements of Electrically Driven Dairy Manufacturing Equipment The size of motor used should be equivalent to the power require ment of the machine driven or, in order to care for overloads, it may be a trifle oversize. Most motors are made large enough to carry a momentary overload of 100 per cent. The efficiency of a motor is highest at or very near its rated capacity, and drops off markedly at loads below one-half or above one and one-fourth of its rated horse power. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Applied Electricity What do you know about electricity? Can you explain simple circuits, losses, power and efficiency, wiring calculations, how generators and motors are installed, how they work, what efficiency means and how to calculate it, and how current for electric lighting and heating is estimated? "Know the fundamentals" is the cry of the hour. Here is a series of discussion which has appeared in the columns of the Journal of Electricity in cooperation with the Extension Division of the University of California on the all-important subject of elementary laws of electricity. The forwarding of this movement is a matter that strongly appeals to every member of the electrical industry - manufacturers, jobbers, central station men, electrical contractors and dealers-and has received the heartiest endorsement of the electrical industry from all quarters. These discussions which appeared in the columns of the Journal of Electricity during the year of 1919-1920 under the endorsement of the California Electrical Cooperative Campaign, an organization composed of all members of the electrical industry, have received wide and emphatic endorsement. The author, Mr. H. H. Bliss, for a number of years was head of the technical instruction of the Extension Division of the University of California, and while occupying that position gave this course through the University Extension in cooperation with the Journal of Electricity. The course proved unusually successful, and aroused interest throughout the West in the study of fundamentals. It is with this same hope that this group of papers may prove of increasing helpfulness that the Journal of Electricity has compiled these pages into book form in order that a permanent record may be had with these papers in one volume so that the biggest and most intensified use of this valuable collection may be offered to that ever growing group of young and enthusiastic us well as ambitious men in our industry who wish to forward themselves to greater remuneration from their employers and to greater usefulness in their chosen profession. There are reasons for the rapidity of the advance, and a glance at the history of the science will Show how it was that electricity suddenly appeared in the commercial world after having passed centuries in the grub-stage in the labora tories of philosophers. Electric Power and Traction (Classic Reprint)

Electric Power and Traction (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: F. H. Davies
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780267626519
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Power and Traction IN common with practically every industry Electrical Engineering has become the centre of a wide and increasing circle of allied trades, of which probably the majority are connected in some way or another with its Power and Traction branches. To the members of such trades and callings, to whom some knowledge of applied Electrical Engineering is desirable if not strictly essential, this book is particularly intended to appeal. It may also be useful to the student as it covers with but small exception purely practical ground, and enters to some extent into those commercial considerations which in the long run must overrule all others. For obvious reasons it is impossible to incorporate in one volume the whole theory and practice of a subject so far reaching as Electric Power and Traction; it therefore becomes necessary at the outset to credit the reader with a certain amount of scientific and technical knowledge: to fix the standard, let us say, such as should naturally have been acquired by observation in the practice of an allied trade and by general reading in an age that is essentially electric. Public Lighting

Public Lighting PDF Author: W. J. Dibdin
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781528251204
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 606

Book Description
Excerpt from Public Lighting: By Gas and Electricity The scheme of the present work has been to collect together a series of representative facts relating to the production and utilisation of light for public use, whether by means of coal gas or electricity. In such a connection auxiliary methods, such as the use of acetylene and petroleum, could not be passed over, and therefore are included. It would have been impossible to comprise full details of all adjuncts relating to thwe several subjects within the compass of a volume of the present size, and therefore much interesting matter has necessarily been left out, but it is hoped that the essential features have been indicated with sufficient clearness. The reader who desires to follow the various processes involved in the production of either coal gas or electricity, af r reading the introductory accounts herein given, will doubtless continue their study in the more strictly technical text-books. The accounts given of the results of actual working operations will, it is believed, be of no little interest, particularly the full information afforded in the valuable reports by Mr. Bellamy, City Lighting Engineer of Liverpool, whose work in this direction has deservedly gained the approbation of all those who have followed its progress Probably in no other town has public lighting been more successfully and economically studied and carried into effect. The particulars relating tothe progress which has been made in the production and utilisation of electricity is well exemplified in the case of Bristol, where the important factor of the day-load has received much attention, resulting in a striking success. A feature of the present work which will, it is hoped, be of much assistance to those having charge of public lighting is the valuable series of tables, giving full particulars of the systems employed in a large number of representative towns both in America and England. The author has to express his sincere thanks to the various authorities referred to, who have in every case kindly revised the proof sheets, thereby bringing them up to date and ensuring their correctness. Sincere thanks are due to those gentlemen who have kindly supplied illustrations for the work and assisted with much valuable information.
