Honduras has accomplished important political, economic, and social achievements in the recent past. The country underwent a successful transition from an authoritarian military regime to a pluralistic democracy. The list of economic achievements of the last four years includes: macroeconomic stability, improvements in the business climate and the performance of the financial sector, and putting in place a sound framework for public sector financial management. Progress toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has also been significant. Despite these achievements, state institutions are still fragile and the governance framework is weak. Furthermore, notwithstanding the country's economic and social improvement, almost two-thirds of the population still lives below the poverty line and key structural constraints on growth have still to be addressed. The key development challenges for Honduras are: (a) strengthening governance and improving the effectiveness of the government, and (b) accelerating its recent growth performance and translating growth into poverty reduction. Among the recommendations the report makes are: The development of additional regulations, strengthen links between the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and other management instruments, particularly Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) and zoning. Work with the Honduran government to strengthen the follow-up and compliance process as well as strengthening public participation in the EIA process.

Bananas, the most frequently consumed fresh fruit in the United States, have been linked to Miss Chiquita and Carmen Miranda, "banana republics," and Banana Republic clothing stores—everything from exotic kitsch, to Third World dictatorships, to middle-class fashion. But how did the rise in banana consumption in the United States affect the banana-growing regions of Central America? In this lively, interdisciplinary study, John Soluri integrates agroecology, anthropology, political economy, and history to trace the symbiotic growth of the export banana industry in Honduras and the consumer mass market in the United States. Beginning in the 1870s when bananas first appeared in the U.S. marketplace, Soluri examines the tensions between the small-scale growers, who dominated the trade in the early years, and the shippers. He then shows how rising demand led to changes in production that resulted in the formation of major agribusinesses, spawned international migrations, and transformed great swaths of the Honduran environment into monocultures susceptible to plant disease epidemics that in turn changed Central American livelihoods. Soluri also looks at labor practices and workers' lives, changing gender roles on the banana plantations, the effects of pesticides on the Honduran environment and people, and the mass marketing of bananas to consumers in the United States. Known as the 'Blue Revolution', the global expansion of aquaculture has raised a number of important questions regarding the impact of economic development on both environment and society. To understand the debates surrounding the impact of aquaculture expansion, a case study of environmental conflict in the Gulf of Fonseca, southern Honduras is utilized. Covering the period between 1973 and 2006, the case study draws on an extensive literature review, over 100 open-ended and semi-structured interviews, newspaper archival research, and a collection of relevant documents from the actors involved in the conflict.The research employed a poststructuralist political ecology framework, combining two approaches in the analysis of environmental conflict: actor-network approaches and discourse analysis. The combination of these approaches, in the context of event history and events ecology, assisted with unraveling the complex relationship between society, environment, and development in conflict scenarios. I conclude that environmental conflict is both a struggle related to access and control over a physical geographic space, and a struggle over the control of discursive space - the realm where knowledge about the environment is socially produced. In this regard, I argue that natural resource managers need to move beyond purely biophysical explanations of environmental change to incorporate social scientific methods in order to analyze the role of knowledge, power, and politics in environmental conflict.
