Representations of Algebraic Groups

Representations of Algebraic Groups PDF Author: Jens Carsten Jantzen
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 9780821835272
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 652

Book Description
Now back in print by the AMS, this is a significantly revised edition of a book originally published in 1987 by Academic Press. This book gives the reader an introduction to the theory of algebraic representations of reductive algebraic groups. To develop appropriate techniques, the first part of the book is an introduction to the general theory of representations of algebraic group schemes. Here, the author describes important basic notions: induction functors, cohomology, quotients, Frobenius kernels, and reduction mod $p$, among others. The second part of the book is devoted to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups. It includes topics such as the description of simple modules, vanishing theorems, the Borel-Bott-Weil theorem and Weyl's character formula, andSchubert schemes and line bundles on them. For this revised edition the author added nearly 150 pages of new material describing some later developments, among them Schur algebras, Lusztig's conjecture and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, tilting modules, and representations of quantum groups. He also made major revisions to parts of the old text. Jantzen's book continues to be the ultimate source of information on representations of algebraic groups in finite characteristics. It is suitable forgraduate students and research mathematicians interested in algebraic groups and their representations.

Level One Algebraic Cusp Forms of Classical Groups of Small Rank

Level One Algebraic Cusp Forms of Classical Groups of Small Rank PDF Author: Gaëtan Chenevier
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 147041094X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
The authors determine the number of level 1, polarized, algebraic regular, cuspidal automorphic representations of GLn over Q of any given infinitesimal character, for essentially all n≤8. For this, they compute the dimensions of spaces of level 1 automorphic forms for certain semisimple Z-forms of the compact groups SO7, SO8, SO9 (and G2) and determine Arthur's endoscopic partition of these spaces in all cases. They also give applications to the 121 even lattices of rank 25 and determinant 2 found by Borcherds, to level one self-dual automorphic representations of GLn with trivial infinitesimal character, and to vector valued Siegel modular forms of genus 3. A part of the authors' results are conditional to certain expected results in the theory of twisted endoscopy.

Subgroup Complexes

Subgroup Complexes PDF Author: Stephen D. Smith
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821805010
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 378

Book Description
This book is intended as an overview of a research area that combines geometries for groups (such as Tits buildings and generalizations), topological aspects of simplicial complexes from $p$-subgroups of a group (in the spirit of Brown, Quillen, and Webb), and combinatorics of partially ordered sets. The material is intended to serve as an advanced graduate-level text and partly as a general reference on the research area. The treatment offers optional tracks for the reader interested in buildings, geometries for sporadic simple groups, and $G$-equivariant equivalences and homology for subgroup complexes.

Invariants of Homology 3-Spheres

Invariants of Homology 3-Spheres PDF Author: Nikolai Saveliev
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662047055
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 229

Book Description
The book gives a systematic exposition of the diverse ideas and methods in the area, from algebraic topology of manifolds to invariants arising from quantum field theories. The main topics covered include: constructions and classification of homology 3-spheres, Rokhlin invariant, Casson invariant and its extensions, and Floer homology and gauge-theoretical invariants of homology cobordism. Many of the topics covered in the book appear in monograph form for the first time. The book gives a rather broad overview of ideas and methods and provides a comprehensive bibliography. The text will be a valuable source for both the graduate student and researcher in mathematics and theoretical physics.

Symmetry, Representations, and Invariants

Symmetry, Representations, and Invariants PDF Author: Roe Goodman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387798528
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 731

Book Description
Symmetry is a key ingredient in many mathematical, physical, and biological theories. Using representation theory and invariant theory to analyze the symmetries that arise from group actions, and with strong emphasis on the geometry and basic theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, Symmetry, Representations, and Invariants is a significant reworking of an earlier highly-acclaimed work by the authors. The result is a comprehensive introduction to Lie theory, representation theory, invariant theory, and algebraic groups, in a new presentation that is more accessible to students and includes a broader range of applications. The philosophy of the earlier book is retained, i.e., presenting the principal theorems of representation theory for the classical matrix groups as motivation for the general theory of reductive groups. The wealth of examples and discussion prepares the reader for the complete arguments now given in the general case. Key Features of Symmetry, Representations, and Invariants: (1) Early chapters suitable for honors undergraduate or beginning graduate courses, requiring only linear algebra, basic abstract algebra, and advanced calculus; (2) Applications to geometry (curvature tensors), topology (Jones polynomial via symmetry), and combinatorics (symmetric group and Young tableaux); (3) Self-contained chapters, appendices, comprehensive bibliography; (4) More than 350 exercises (most with detailed hints for solutions) further explore main concepts; (5) Serves as an excellent main text for a one-year course in Lie group theory; (6) Benefits physicists as well as mathematicians as a reference work.

A Course in Finite Group Representation Theory

A Course in Finite Group Representation Theory PDF Author: Peter Webb
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107162394
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 339

Book Description
This graduate-level text provides a thorough grounding in the representation theory of finite groups over fields and rings. The book provides a balanced and comprehensive account of the subject, detailing the methods needed to analyze representations that arise in many areas of mathematics. Key topics include the construction and use of character tables, the role of induction and restriction, projective and simple modules for group algebras, indecomposable representations, Brauer characters, and block theory. This classroom-tested text provides motivation through a large number of worked examples, with exercises at the end of each chapter that test the reader's knowledge, provide further examples and practice, and include results not proven in the text. Prerequisites include a graduate course in abstract algebra, and familiarity with the properties of groups, rings, field extensions, and linear algebra.

Irreducible Almost Simple Subgroups of Classical Algebraic Groups

Irreducible Almost Simple Subgroups of Classical Algebraic Groups PDF Author: Timothy C. Burness
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 147041046X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
Let be a simple classical algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic with natural module . Let be a closed subgroup of and let be a nontrivial -restricted irreducible tensor indecomposable rational -module such that the restriction of to is irreducible. In this paper the authors classify the triples of this form, where and is a disconnected almost simple positive-dimensional closed subgroup of acting irreducibly on . Moreover, by combining this result with earlier work, they complete the classification of the irreducible triples where is a simple algebraic group over , and is a maximal closed subgroup of positive dimension.
