Excerpt from Report on the State Agricultural Experiment Stations, 1956 The Hatch Act has greatly aided and stimulated the growth of the State experiment stations to the important part of the publicly sponsored national research establishment which they now represent. The Secretary of Agriculture has long stressed cooperation and coordination of effort as major objectives in the proper administration of Federal-grant payments. This coordinative function has, since the legislation first went into effect, created a pattern of close research cooperation between the experiment stations and the Department of Agriculture. Although the experiment stations, as part of the State land-grant colleges, are autonomous State institutions, their research is closely linked with departmental research through cooperative planning and coordination of effort on many problems of mutual concern.
