The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy
Author: Hopestone Chavula
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198890184
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 705
Book Description
The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy is an essential reference material with new research contributions and insights across the different areas of economic development to shape the country's future growth and development trajectory. The volume is the first publication that tries to assess the performance of the Malawi economy since independence, by examining how the underpinning political and economic history, and the associated policies and strategies have affected the country's long-term socio-economic development. It captures a broad range of opinions, approaches, and conclusions, which serve to underline both the complexity of the issues and challenges facing Malawi, and the immense difficulties in tackling them. Common themes emerge as many authors agree that the country needs to learn from its past experiences in terms of policy design and implementation, and the need to implement dynamic policies that could spur productive and sustained growth and development by tackling challenges associated with the continuously evolving global economic environment.

Medicine, mobility and the empire
Author: Markku Hokkanen
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526123894
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 287
Book Description
David Livingstone’s Zambesi expedition marked the beginning of an ongoing series of medical exchanges between the British and Malawians. This book explores these entangled histories by placing medicine in the frameworks of mobilities and networks that extended across Southern Africa and beyond. It provides a new approach to the study of medicine and empire. Drawing on a range of written and oral sources, the book argues that mobility was a crucial aspect of intertwined medical cultures that shared a search for therapy in changing conditions. Mobile individuals, ideas and materials played key roles in medical networks that involved both professionals and laypeople. These networks connected colonial medicine with Protestant Christianity and migrant labour. The book will be of value to scholars and students of history and anthropology of colonialism and medicine, as well as a wider readership interested in the plural search for health in Africa and globally.

Colonial Planning
Author: Barbu Niculescu
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000855899
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 186
Book Description
Colonial Planning (1958) breaks new ground in its study of colonial development plans on a comparative basis. It starts with a summary of the statistical data for the 70 odd territories studied, including territorial incomes, capital accumulation, origin and size of planning finances and metropolitan contributions, both within and outside the plans. This section also discusses the validity and comparability of the data. The author then selects, with the help of the many contributions to the study of the problems of economic growth, those problems which seem especially relevant to administrative planning. After an outline of the historical developments which have led to the widespread acceptance of colonial planning in its then-current forms, he analyses the various types of planning machinery established both in the metropolitan centres and in the territories, traces their connections and attempts a classification of their organisational problems. Finally, he analyses and classifies the plans themselves, giving special attention to attempts at solving the problems of priorities. This work is based on administrative documents, and especially on the various colonial development plans put forward since the war: colonial development planning so far has been mainly an administrative exercise and its problems, methods, scope and aims can be best understood if studies within an administrative context.
