Book Description
Excerpt from Report on the Diatoms of the Albatross Voyages in the Pacific Ocean, L888-1904 The coarse sand, Radiolaria, and like impurities are now removed by rotating the material in a glass evaporating dish. By quickly revolving the lowest point of the dish in a small circle of, say, one-half inch a peculiar motion is given to the contents, on account of which. The large sand and other coarse ingredients collect in a mound at the center, while the diatoms are held in suspension. The liquid is quickly poured off from the sand, the process being repeated until the sand is found under the microscope to be free from diatoms. The cleaned diatoms are then preserved in bottles in a 40 per cent solution of alcohol with distilled water. Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Pacific Manganese Nodule Province

Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Pacific Manganese Nodule Province PDF Author: James L. Bischoff
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468435183
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 839

Book Description
Deep-sea manganese nodules, once an obscure scientific curios ity, have, in the brief span of two decades, become a potential mineral resource of major importance. Nodules that cover the sea floor of the tropical North Pacific may represent a vast ore de posit of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Modern technology has apparently surmounted the incredible problem of recovering nodules in water depths of 5000 meters and the extraction of metals from the complex chemical nodule matrix is a reality. Both the recovery and the extraction appear to be economically feasible. Exploitation of this resource is, however, hindered more by the lack of an international legal structure allowing for recognition of mining sites and exploitation rights, than by any other factor. Often, when a mineral deposit becomes identified as an ex ploitable resource, scientific study burgeons. Interest in the nature and genesis of the deposit increases and much is learned from large scale exploration. The case is self evident for petrol eum and ore deposits on land. The study of manganese nodules is just now entering this phase. What was the esoteric field of a few scientists has become the subject of active exploration and research by most of the industrialized nations. Unfortunately for our general understanding of manganese nodules, exploration results remain largely proprietary. However, scientific study has greatly increased and the results are becoming widely available.

The Micropalaeontology of Oceans

The Micropalaeontology of Oceans PDF Author: B. M. Funnell
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521076420
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 842

Book Description
This 1971 volume presents the proceedings of a Symposium of Micropalaeontology of Marine Bottom Sediments held in Cambridge, England, in September 1967. The collection and paleontological interpretations of deep-sea sediments had only been carried out intensively for the twenty years preceding the book's publication, and it provides a summary of the state of knowledge in this field as it stood. Beginning with a consideration of the organisms in relation to the water in which they live, successive chapters deal with the descent of the skeletons to the sea floor, their entombment in the sediments and their interpretation to elucidate the history of the oceans. It is written by many of the specialists responsible for the development of this field and includes numerous Russian contributions. This book became the definitive compendium for students and workers in oceanography and palaeontology, and is still a useful resource today.
