Book Description
Excerpt from d104-Books in American History: A Report Presented by the Committee on d104-Books, October 15, 1898 In the various characteristics which go to make up a satis factory text-book in American history, it may frankly be said that recent writers show many intimations of approaching perfection. The extent to which they fall short is the meas ure of the teacher's disadvantage. The Committee have hardly felt able to draw, either for themselves or for the Asso ciation, a picture of the ideal text-book; on the contrary, they have kept ever before them the fact that the teacher is a more important factor than the book he uses; that a teacher with out an individuality of his own can scarcely be called a teacher at all; and that the kind of pupils to be dealt with, and the time and facilities available for the work, are factors of which no one book can take universal account. In eriti cising, accordingly, the list of books selected, the Committee have sought rather to keep in mind certain characteristics which, in their judgment, every text-book should possess, and to test each work by these standards. An American History (Classic Reprint)

An American History (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: David Saville Muzzey
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781396350269
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 734

Book Description
Excerpt from An American History The present volume represents the newer tendencies in his toxical writing. Its aim is not to tell over 'once more the old story in the old way, but to give the emphasis to those factors in our national development which appeal to us as most vital from the standpoint of to-day. However various may be the ad vantages of historical study, one of them, and perhaps the most unmistakable, is to explain prevailing conditions and institutions by showing how they have come about. This is our best way of understanding the present and of placing ourselves in a posi tion to participate intelligently in the solution of the great problems of social and political betterment which it is the duty of all of us to face. Dr. Muzzey has not, therefore, tabulated a series of historical occurrences under successive presidential administrations, but has carefully selected the great phases in the development of our country and treated them in a coherent fashion. He has exhibited great skill in so ordering them that they form a continuous narrative which will secure and retain the interest of the student. There is no question at any point of the importance of the topics selected and their relation to our whole complex development. All minor, uncorrelated mat ters, such as the circumstances attending each colonial planta tion the tactics and casualties of military campaigns, the careers of men of slight influence in high office, are boldly omitted on the ground that they make no permanent impression on the student's mind and serve only to confuse and blur the larger issues. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee of Eight of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples of European race. The remainder contains descriptions of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades opens with a chapter which repeats brie y the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially of those within the comprehension of the pupil of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases of the political and military history of the country must be reserved for later study. Book Description
Excerpt from Annual Report of the American Historical Association, 1899 The New Haven meeting of this national historical society was the most successful in its history. During the three days convention, December 28-30, the morning and evening sessions were attended by large and enthusiastic audiences. An attractive series of interesting historical papers and reports was provided by the programme committee, of which Prof. E. G. Bourne, of Yale University, was the chairman. The local committee of arrangements did all that was possible for the entertainment and pleasure of the visiting members of the American Historical and American Economic associations. As occasionally in former years, so now these two kindred societies met at the same time, in the same city. The opening meeting of the Economic Association was held Tuesday evening, December 27, in the beautiful and spacious hall of the New Haven Colony Historical Society. After a cordial welcome from President Dwight, on behalf of the society, the city, and the university, and after the inaugural address by Prof. Arthur T. Hadley, the visiting members of both associations were pleasantly received by Professor and Mrs. Henry W. Farnam at their house on Hillhouse avenue. After Professor Fishers inaugural address Wednesday evening, at the opening of the Historical convention in Colonial Hall, both associations were received by the Historical Society in their lower rooms, which are nobly furnished with historical memorials of New Haven Colony and with portraits of its famous men. Not even Pilgrim Hall in old Plymouth could afford a richer or more suggestive environment for historical meetings, social and literary, than does the Colonial Hall in New Haven.
