Book Description
Meat, Milk & More: Policy Innovations to Shepherd Inclusive and Sustainable Livestock Systems in Africa highlights options for sustainably promoting growth in the livestock sector, drawing from what four African countries—Ethiopia, Mali, South Africa, and Uganda—have done successfully in terms of institutional and policy innovation as well as programmatic interventions. By adapting these lessons to countries’ specific contexts and scaling them up across the continent, African governments can meet their national and international commitments to agricultural growth and transformation.

Toponymy on the Periphery
Author: Julien Cooper
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004422218
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 736
Book Description
"In Toponymy on the Periphery, Julien Charles Cooper conducts a study of the rich geographies preserved in Egyptian texts relating to the desert regions east of Egypt. These regions, filled with mines, quarries, nomadic camps, and harbours are often considered as an unimportant hinterland of the Egyptian state, but this work reveals the wide explorations and awareness Egyptians had of the Red Sea and its adjacent deserts, from the Sinai in the north to Punt in the south. The book attempts to locate many of the placenames present in Egyptian texts and analyse their etymology in light of Egyptian linguistics and the various foreign languages spoken in the adjacent deserts and distant shores of the Red Sea"--

Agriculture for improved nutrition: Seizing the momentum
Author: Fan, Shenggen
Publisher: Intl Food Policy Res Inst
ISBN: 1786399318
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 233
Book Description
Agriculture's vast potential to improve nutrition is just beginning to be tapped. New ideas, research, and initiatives developed over the past decade have created an opportunity for reimagining and redesigning agricultural and food systems for the benefit of nutrition. To support this transformation, the book reviews the latest findings, results from on-the-ground programs and interventions, and recent policy experiences from countries around the world that are bringing the agriculture and nutrition sectors closer together. Drawing on IFPRI's own work and that of the growing agriculture-nutrition community, this book strengthens the evidence base for, and expands our vision of, how agriculture can contribute to nutrition. Chapters cover an array of issues that link agriculture and nutrition, including food value chains, nutrition-sensitive programs and policies, government policies, and private sector investments. By highlighting both achievements and setbacks, Agriculture for Improved Nutrition seeks to inspire those who want to scale up successes that can transform food systems and improve the nutrition of billions of people.

Brassica Improvement
Author: Shabir Hussain Wani
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030346943
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 261
Book Description
Global population is mounting at an alarming stride to surpass 9.3 billion by 2050, whereas simultaneously the agricultural productivity is gravely affected by climate changes resulting in increased biotic and abiotic stresses. The genus Brassica belongs to the mustard family whose members are known as cruciferous vegetables, cabbages or mustard plants. Rapeseed-mustard is world’s third most important source of edible oil after soybean and oil palm. It has worldwide acceptance owing to its rare combination of health promoting factors. It has very low levels of saturated fatty acids which make it the healthiest edible oil that is commonly available. Apart from this, it is rich in antioxidants by virtue of tocopherols and phytosterols presence in the oil. The high omega 3 content reduces the risk of atherosclerosis/heart attack. Conventional breeding methods have met with limited success in Brassica because yield and stress resilience are polygenic traits and are greatly influenced by environment. Therefore, it is imperative to accelerate the efforts to unravel the biochemical, physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying yield, quality and tolerance towards biotic and abiotic stresses in Brassica. To exploit its fullest potential, systematic efforts are needed to unlock the genetic information for new germplasms that tolerate initial and terminal state heat coupled with moisture stress. For instance, wild relatives may be exploited in developing introgressed and resynthesized lines with desirable attributes. Exploitation of heterosis is another important area which can be achieved by introducing transgenics to raise stable CMS lines. Doubled haploid breeding and marker assisted selection should be employed along with conventional breeding. Breeding programmes aim at enhancing resource use efficiency, especially nutrient and water as well as adoption to aberrant environmental changes should also be considered. Biotechnological interventions are essential for altering the biosynthetic pathways for developing high oleic and low linolenic lines. Accordingly, tools such as microspore and ovule culture, embryo rescue, isolation of trait specific genes especially for aphid, Sclerotinia and alternaria blight resistance, etc. along with identification of potential lines based on genetic diversity can assist ongoing breeding programmes. In this book, we highlight the recent molecular, genetic and genomic interventions made to achieve crop improvement in terms of yield increase, quality and stress tolerance in Brassica, with a special emphasis in Rapeseed-mustard.

Category : Drinking water
Languages : en
Pages : 131
Book Description
This training material is targeted primarily at government officials, with the view that training workshops should be part of a national plan for the support and scale-up of HWTS. These training materials are made up of a Trainer Manual, which provides guidance on planning workshops, selecting trainers and participants, logistic arrangements, and other preparations for workshops, and this manula for participants. The training materials may be adapted to suit the audience. As HWTS is relevant for other health initiatives, such as nutrition, maternal and child health, and HIV/AIDS, the wider application and dissemination of this training material is greatly encouraged as an option for improving the safety of water, especially among the vulnerable populations and the poor.

Women's Access to Higher Education in Africa
Author: Joy C. Kwesiga
Publisher: Fountain Books
ISBN:
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 336
Book Description
This book addresses the gender divide in access to higher education and the Ugandan situation. It examines theories of girls' education, human capital, gender inequality and gender-development, bringing views from Africa and its institutions to debates often constructed and conducted in the West. Whilst commending the work of women's movements and NGO's in furthering the educational cause, it criticises fashionable neo-liberal economic/educational policies which are diverting researchers not institutions, thus diminishing local universities and women. The volume also presents the results of a survey of female undergraduates at the University of Makerere, which give rise to discussions about family, societal, and institutional influences on women's access to higher education. This is a welcome book on women in higher education written by an African female academic, insider, and popular and outstanding contributor to the progress of women in higher education in East Africa.
