Advances in Parasitology
Author:
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080580904
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 370
Book Description
There are currently 3-5 million cases of leishmaniasis in the world and the prevalence is rising. The first chapter in this volume reviews the cell biology of the parasite and its transmission and survival. The second review addresses the apicomplexan protozoan parasites Theileria anulaga, T. parva and T. sergenti which globally cost agriculture over one billion US dollars annually. Current research in this area aims to produce effective, stable and cheap subunit viruses requiring only a single application and the authors predict that success will eventually be achieved with 'naked DNA' vaccines containing cytokine genes as immunopotentiators. The next review is the first in over 30 years to discuss the larva of the class Monogenea. The authors cover morphology, behaviour and structure of many examples providing a detailed reference for researchers. The penultimate chapter discusses the distribution of Schistosoma bovis and considers the reported interactions occurring between parasites and snails. The final chapter reviews one of the most serious parasitic diseases in salmonid aquaculture - sealice. In 1998 the costs due to sealice damage in Scotland alone were estimated at 15-30 million pounds. Discussion of biology and control of these ectoparasites emphasizes the need to understand the basic biology of the parasite. This volume will be essential reading for parasitologists in many branches of the subject.

Inshore Fisheries Management
Author: David Symes
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940171892X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
Despite their importance in terms of employment and income generation, inshore fisheries have been a neglected area of study. The review of the common fisheries policy, especially in the light of the need to re-examine the derogation which reserves access to the inshore zone to coastal state vessels, provides an opportunity to redress the balance. With contributions from leading authorities on fisheries management, the book takes an in-depth look at seven European countries, examining the basis for the definition of inshore fisheries, evaluating their status, and describing the salient characteristics of their management. The national studies form the basis for cross-cultural analyses of the social organisation, cultural norms, economic objectives, and institutional structures of inshore fisheries in Europe. Finally, a number of key issues relating to the future of inshore fisheries management in a more integrated approach are examined. Overall the volume reaffirms the invaluable role played by inshore fisheries in the local and regional economies of Europe's complex coastline.

Environmental Impacts of Aquaculture
Author: Kenneth D. Black
Publisher: Taylor & Francis US
ISBN: 9781841270418
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
The continued expansion of aquaculture – in a wide range of environments and of a growing number of species has lead to increasing demands on aquatic resources. These demands vary with the culture species, the culture method and the environmental and ecological setting. While there are many examples of efforts to mitigate detrimental environmental effects, the environment remains the ultimate constraint on the future sustainable development of this maturing industry. The relationships between the activities of aquaculture and the environment are therefore of economic importance as well as of scientific interest and, for these reasons, a large international research community has developed over the past decade. In this volume, the resultant research is synthesised and critically reviewed, providing a source of reference to the most important recent developments at research and professional level. The authors are internationally recognised authorities who have made significant contributions to their respective research areas. The first part of the volume is organised in terms of the major culture types. This is followed by chapters of general relevance to aquaculture. The volume is designed to complement Biology of Farmed Fish (eds K D Black/A D Pickering), also published in this series. It is directed at fish biologists, shellfish biologists and environmental scientists working in the academic, governmental and industrial sectors.
