Book Description
Excerpt from Report of the President of Bowdoin College for the Academic Year 1897-98 The ideal of instruction at which the college has long been aiming has at length been nearly realized. With very slight exceptions, class instruction is given exclusively by experienced and mature professors; and the work of tutors is limited to supplementing the work of the professor by more intimate per sonal instruction in groups of three or four students. To this principle the only exceptions are that the class of four students who, having entered on an alternative requirement, desired to begin Greek in college, has been taught throughout the year by a tutor; the Sophomore division in Greek has been taught during the spring term by a tutor; and one term of mathematics in Fresh man year and one term of mathematics in Sophomore year has been taught by a tutor. I With these four exceptions, amounting to two courses of a year each, all the class instruction has been given by the professors. Book Description
Excerpt from Report of the President of Bowdoin College: For the Academic Year 1896-97 A few of the most useful books of reference have recently been put into the class - room, where they are often needed in the course of a recitation. This plan encourages research, for it gives the instructor the opportunity to explain the value and proper use of particular books, and to assist the student in his quest for information. Such an introduction to the best helps tends to increase the usefulness of the college library. A depart mental library, well stocked with books, maps, and other illustra tive material, is a necessary adjunct to a classical recitation room, if the best work is to be done. A workshop, where the necessary tools are always at hand, and where, at stated times, the student can feel sure of all needed assistance, is a strong incentive to work. Only the first step toward such an equipment has been taken, and every year ought to record progress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Report of the President of Bowdoin College: For the Academic Year 1893-94 Yet, to make this increased room effective, we must have an amount of apparatus far beyond what we have now. We need this added apparatus, not to introduce new and special courses, but to teach in the best manner the courses we now Offer. Careful estimates show that, in order to bring our instruction in science up to the demands Of modern scientific training, and to make it in any degree commensurate with the splendid facilities which the Searles Science Building affords, we need, at the least, for physical apparatus, for chemical apparatus, and for biological apparatus or to equip these departments for the suitable occupa tion of the building, and the effective prosecution Of their work. More than this sum could be profitably used; to enter the building with less would be a great mistake. The adequate equipment of either or all Of these departments is especially commended as a most welcome centennial gift to the college.
