Protecting Our Ports

Protecting Our Ports PDF Author: Suzette R. Grillot
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317074319
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, there has been much discussion of the security of borders and ports of entry in the United States and around the world. Ports of entry, particularly sea ports, are viewed as one of the most defenceless targets for a terrorist attack. In response to this perceived vulnerability, a number of port security initiatives have been implemented both on both a domestic and international level. This timely project investigates a number of issues surrounding the container security issue. It examines the scope of containerized freight security, analyzes cooperation between agents in the United States and abroad, explores the politics of port security, and provides an assessment of 17 of the world's sea ports. The work sheds light on the container security threat and the domestic and international responses that have emerged, as well as those steps that still must be taken.

EU-US Cooperation on Internal Security

EU-US Cooperation on Internal Security PDF Author: Dimitrios Anagnostakis
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1315520168
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 181

Book Description
This book analyses the cooperation between the European Union and the United States on internal security and counter-terrorism since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In particular, four areas of cooperation are examined: customs and supply chain security; judicial cooperation (the mutual legal assistance and extradition agreements); law enforcement cooperation (the Europol-US agreements); and the EU-US agreements for the sharing of air passengers’ data (PNR agreements). These cases are analysed through a conceptual framework based on the theories of international regimes, with the data being drawn from an extensive documentary analysis of media sources collected through the 'Nexis' database, official documents, and from 13 semi-structured elite interviews with US and EU officials. The book argues that the EU and the US have established a transatlantic internal security regime based on shared principles, norms, rules, and interests. While at the beginning of this process the EU had a more reactive and passive stance at the later stages both the EU and the US were active in shaping the transatlantic political agenda and negotiations. The book demonstrates how the EU has had a much more proactive role in its relations with the US than has often been assumed in the current literature. This book will be of much interest to students of EU policy, foreign policy, international security and IR in general.

Pages : 327

Book Description
These papers enhance our understanding of numerous aspects of the terrorism problem. Andrew Haughwout, Papers in Regional Science The Economic Impact of Terrorist Attacks exposes the reader to a healthy sampling of the current approaches that researchers have taken in addressing a challenging set of economic problems. Jared C. Carbone, Journal of Regional Science Knowledgeably compiled and expertly co-edited by the team of Harry W. Richardson, Peter Gordon and James E. Moore II, The Economic Impacts of Terrorist Attacks is a groundbreaking study of the extensive damage done to the American economy as a result of terrorism with a particular focus on the attacks in 2001. . . very highly recommended to students of politics, economics, and the present war on terrorism . The Midwest Book Review Focussing on the economics of terrorism in the post 9/11 world, this book brings together original research based on the collaborative efforts of leading economists and planners. The authoritative and expert contributors use a variety of methodological approaches and apply them to different types of terrorist attacks (on airports, highways, seaports, electric power infrastructure, for example). They also draw analogies between man-made and natural disasters. The results suggest that these issues are extremely complex and that the economic costs of some types of attack are huge, but that increased understanding and estimation can be used to justify resource investments in prevention, mitigation and response. A primary aim of the book is to contribute to developing more cost-effective anti-terrorist policies. Scholars and researchers in the fields of transportation, public sector economics, urban planning, disaster prevention, mitigation and management, and engineers will find The Economic Impacts of Terrorist Attacks a major contribution to a new and rapidly expanding research area.
