Book Description
The role of FDI in promoting economic growth in developing countries is undisputable. While FDI helps to fill the investment-saving gap problem, it is also one of the main channels for foreign technology transfer, which in turn contributes to boosting the productivity of manufacturing sector. The empirical findings of this study suggest that economic growth in Malaysia has been considerably influenced by capital input, especially from FDIs. The empirical evidences show that FDI has played a crucial role in the development by strengthening the labor productivity through capital goods in the form of embodied technology. At the same time, however, such kind of FDI-driven industrial progress in Malaysia is vulnerable to charging pattern of FDI flows from industrialized countries to latecomer countries, especially China. The findings of this study therefore suggest that, while outward-looking strategy remains desirable to promote economic growth in Malaysia, it is enhance the productivity of domestic production factors. This includes improvement of human capital, greater R&D activities, and diversification of manufacturing activities in which Malaysia possesses a specific comparative advantage.
