Book Description
Excerpt from Report of the Chief of the Bureau of Agricultural and Industrial Chemistry, Agricultural Research Administration, 1946 Among the various treatments examined, those that deposit mineral pigments on the fiber, such as lead chromate and iron tannate, have appeared to be the most effective in resisting the destructive action of sunlight and other weathering factors on cotton cellulose. Since the color imparted to fabrics by application of mineral pigments tends to limit their range of usefulness, attention has also been given to the possibility of utilizing, for protection against sunlight, other materials that do not noticeably color the treated fabric. For example, a form of urea-formaldehyde resin that is light in color has been observed to retard the degradation of cotton exposed to carbon-arc radiations, and cloth treated with this compound is being tested for resistance to deterioration by sunlight.
