Book Description
Excerpt from Report of National Woman's Liberty Loan Committee for the Fourth Liberty Loan Campaign: September 28th to October 19th, 1918 When the United States went into war with Germany the business of bond selling was a field so new to women that all work within it has been genuine pioneering. The organization of women for the task has been the work of the National Woman's Liberty Loan Committee, which has served in co-operation with the Treasury's war-loan organization. The members of this committee, serving as volunteers, have performed the work of enlisting more than a half million women as sellers of Liberty bonds. The first labors of the members of the committee, after the closing of the first Liberty loan where their work had been general publicity of war finance among women, were concerned with the adjustment of established organizations of women throughout the country to the established machinery for the raising of the loans. Where organization existed, the women of the Nation were organized by States, while the Treasury's loan organization was based upon the twelve fiscal divisions of the United States. It was the problem of the committee to correlate the two schemes of organization. They solved it by the appointment of both State and Federal Reserve chairmen, the former responsible for actual organization of women in their respective States, the latter serving as the representatives of the women in dealing with the Liberty loan committees of the respective Federal reserve districts. Liberty loan committees elected the women Federal reserve chairmen members of their executive committees. Petticoats and Pinstripes

Petticoats and Pinstripes PDF Author: Sheri J. Caplan
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1440802661
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
This fascinating work presents biographical essays about women from the colonial period to modern times, chronicling the previously untold story of the female financial experience in the United States. Petticoats and Pinstripes: Portraits of Women in Wall Street's History provides a fascinating chronological account of the contributions of women on Wall Street through profiles of selected individuals that set their achievements in the context of the prevailing times. The book documents how women frequently assumed financial roles as a temporary palliative to the nation's ills, only to be cast aside once conditions improved, and how they were often restrained from financial endeavors by various factors, including American legal, political, economic, and cultural norms. Author Sheri J. Caplan describes the accomplishments of women in the financial world against the backdrop of the general advancement of women's rights and the evolution of gender-based roles in society, and identifies the primary factors in the development of a greater female role in finance: wartime urgency, personal necessity, technological change, and financial education.

Book Description
The War at Home brings together some of the state’s leading historians to examine the connections between Arkansas and World War I. These essays explore how historical entities and important events such as Camp Pike, the Little Rock Picric Acid Plant, and the Elaine Race Massacre were related to the conflict as they investigate the issues of gender, race, and public health. This collection sheds new light on the ways that Arkansas participated in the war as well as the ways the war affected Arkansas then and still does today.
