Book Description
Excerpt from Annual Conference of the Indiana Chapters, Daughters of the American Revolution, 1934 The Harrison home was built in 1804 when William Henry Harrison was governor of Indiana Territory and Vincennes was its capital. This is a well preserved old brick building and is supposed to be the first brick house built in the Northwest Territory. Four hundred acres of land was paid by Governor Harrison to the men who furnished the brick. In this old home what great affairs of state were decided in its council chamber and how much the nation owes to the wise men who assembled there to discuss the grave questions in regard to the treatment of the Indians. Under the trees, in the grove surrounding the house, treaties were made with the old Indian chiefs. One tree still survives, under which Governor Harrison held council with the great Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh, and is designated by a beautiful bronze tablet, placed by the Standard Oil Co., as the "Treaty Tree." The old house stands in stately silence not deigning to noticec that it has been shorn of its beautiful surroundings.
