With an imperfect, and generally very defective, knowledge of the country. They are therefore replete with errors; and it is hlardlv to be expected that any of them should present boundary lines which will commend themselves to the unqualified approval of the Commission. Not on this account, however, should these maps be disregarded in the present controversy. A critical examination will certainly disclose therein errors of fact and errors of judgment; but those very errors, especially in cases where they may be found to be general in the maps of a particular period, serve to illustrate the beliefs of the world at that period; and thus throw light upon the meaning of contempora neons treaties.
