Après douze ans d'enseignement en milieu pénitentiaire à la maison d'arrêt de Nîmes, dont il a été exclu, l'auteur de ce travail se propose de mettre en lumière ce qu'il a appelé la "pénitentiarisation" de l'enseignement en milieu carcéral. Celle-ci se laisse appréhender au niveau local, par des faits et gestes quotidiens, comme sur un plan plus général, plus abstrait par l'évolution des textes régissant cette toute petite partie de l'éducation nationale. Malgré cela, dans ce monde particulier qu'est la prison, il montre que toute forme d'action, d'enseignement en l'occurrence n'est pas vaine à condition de s'adosser à des convictions d'ordre éthique devant s'incarner au quotidien dans des pratiques pédagogiques mais aussi à la périphérie de la fonction d'enseignant dont l'acception ne saurait être trop stricte. Enfin, de façon plus ample, après avoir posé quelques jalons quant à "sa" réforme de la prison fondée essentiellement sur la recherche d'autonomie et de responsabilisation des détenus, il s'interroge sur les "bénéfices" que la société peut retirer de la "carcéralisation" croissante d'une part d'elle même et, modestement, dégage quelques pistes pour contrecarrer ce phénomène qui n'est pas fatalement inexorable.
