The Franks in the Aegean

The Franks in the Aegean PDF Author: Peter Lock
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317899725
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 415

Book Description
Despite the enormous literature on the crusades, the Frankish states in the Aegean (set up in the wake of the Fourth Crusade in 1204) have been seriously neglected by modern historians. Yet their history is both compelling in itself - these were the last crusader states to be set up in the eastern Mediterranean and among the last to fall to the Turks - and also valuable for the case study they offer in medieval colonialism. Peter Lock surveys the social, economic, religious and cultural aspects of the region within a broad political framework, and explores the clash of cultures between the Frankish interlopers and their Byzantine subjects. This is a major addition to crusading studies.

The Archaeology of Medieval Greece

The Archaeology of Medieval Greece PDF Author: Peter Lock
Publisher: Oxbow Books Limited
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
Greece's importance in the Middle Ages is often neglected by those more concerned with its Prehistoric or Classical past. But, as the colony of Frankish and Italian maritime Empires and as a haven for the Orthodox Church after the fall of Constantinople, the landscape of Greece is covered in a profusion of Medieval art and architecture. This text brings this heritage back to public attention.

Mousterian Lithic Technology

Mousterian Lithic Technology PDF Author: Steven L. Kuhn
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400864038
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Human beings depend more on technology than any other animal--the use of tools and weapons is vital to the survival of our species. What processes of biocultural evolution led to this unique dependence? Steven Kuhn turns to the Middle Paleolithic (Mousterian) and to artifacts associated with Neanderthals, the most recent human predecessors. His study examines the ecological, economic, and strategic factors that shaped the behavior of Mousterian tool makers, revealing how these hominids brought technological knowledge to bear on the basic problems of survival. Kuhn's main database consists of assemblages of stone artifacts from four caves and a series of open-air localities situated on the western coast of the Italian peninsula. Variations in the ways stone tools were produced, maintained, and discarded demonstrate how Mousterian hominids coped with the problems of keeping mobile groups supplied with the artifacts and raw materials they used on a daily basis. Changes through time in lithic technology were closely tied to shifting strategies for hunting and collecting food. Some of the most provocative findings of this study stem from observations about the behavioral flexibility of Mousterian populations and the role of planning in foraging and technology. Originally published in 1995. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Non-destructive Elemental Analysis

Non-destructive Elemental Analysis PDF Author: Zeev B. Alfassi
Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell
ISBN: 9780632053667
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
This book is written for professional, academic and government analytical chemists. It is a "one-stop-shop" providing an overview and reference source on this subject, which has been growing steadily with outstanding technical developments in recent years. Non-destructive methods are generally nuclear techniques as they depend only on physical properties of the atomic nucleus and do not need the preparation of solutions. However some of the methods as XRF and ICP-MS-LA which depend on the inner electrons or the mass of the atom are also included as they are non-destructive. Non-destructive assays are expanding in the fields of materials, archaeology, biology and the arts. A team of expert authors describes all the major non-destructive methods available to the analyst clearly and concisely. In each case practical examples are used along with detailed coverage of equipment, methodology and underlying theory. In this way readers can gain an appreciation of how day-to-day work is connected to the basic principles.
