Book Description
In 2021, Latin America and the Caribbean saw an increase in the prices of the main export commodities, mainly as a result of the recovery in global demand following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.Issue No. 3 of the ECLAC Natural Resources in Latin America and the Caribbean Bulletin, prepared by the Natural Resources Division of ECLAC, offers an analysis of the movements in prices of non-renewable natural resources and agricultural products in Latin America and the Caribbean, considering the effects of climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic and sustainable economic recovery in the region. The international prices of non-renewable natural resources rose significantly in 2021 and contributed to the economic recovery in the region, particularly in hydrocarbon and metallicmineral- exporting countries. Similarly, agricultural commodity prices rose rapidly in the second half of 2020 and the first half of 2021, which saw agricultural price indices reach 10- year highs. This largely benefited producing countries, however, the combination of high prices and declining incomes is adversely affecting consumers through inflation, particularly the most vulnerable households.

Natural Resources in Latin America and the Caribbean

Natural Resources in Latin America and the Caribbean PDF Author: Emily Sinnott
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 9780821384824
Category : BUSINESS & ECONOMICS
Languages : en
Pages : 82

Book Description
"The question of how to treat commodity production and how to manage recurrent cycles of booms and busts has always been a challenge for policymakers in commodity-dependent countries, including many in the LAC region. These challenges have led to allegations of a "commodity curse'' that retards development in these countries, but as of yet, there is no consensus as to whether such a curse exists, and if so, how can negative effects be minimized. This book contributes to this debate. Much of the report is focused on an examination of specific channels through which commodity dependence may affect the economic and institutional development of countries. This includes broadly 4 sets of concerns: one set dealing with the direct economic effects of commodity dependence and the implications for long-term growth; one dealing with the interactions between commodity production and the rents it generates on the one hand, and a country's institutions on the other; a third dealing with the macroeconomic challenges of managing the volatility of revenue flows, including the distributional implications at the household level posed by cyclicality of social spending; and a final set associated with potential negative environmental and social impacts. The book finds that some commonly accepted negative effects of dependence on natural resources are largely myths, while some are realities. But all can be managed, and the book draws on the best available information in existing literature as well as original analysis to provide practical advice on how to do so. It also presents descriptive facts and analysis of the impacts in LAC of the recent commodity boom, helping the reader understand the implications for the region's development and policies. It should be of great interest to policy-makers and analysts, as well as laypersons interested in the economics of commodity markets and their role in economic development."

Book Description
Drinking water and electricity are basic services that proved essential to counter the impact of the COVID-19 crisis. At the same time, they represented an opportunity for investment to spur economic recovery in the countries of the region. Since the early months of 2022, they have been particularly threatened by the impact of the war in Ukraine on the world prices of fossil fuels, which are basic inputs for both sectors. Together with higher prices for edible oils, cereals and fertilizers, this has led to a rise in poverty and in energy, water and food insecurity in the region. In Latin America and the Caribbean, large inequalities persist in access both to energy and to drinking water and sanitation, owing to a lack of high-quality supply infrastructure capable of providing water and energy security for all. Currently, in the region, 161 million people lack access to safely managed drinking water, 431 million to safely managed sanitation, 17 million to electricity and 75 million to clean cooking fuels and technologies. There is therefore both a need and an opportunity for investment to universalize coverage of these services to the entire population, which would also generate green jobs and new incomes, reduce environmental impacts and improve public health.

The Energy Path of Latin America and the Caribbean

The Energy Path of Latin America and the Caribbean PDF Author: Rigoberto Ariel Yépez-García

Book Description
With rapid energy growth in the past 40 years, the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region has maintained a steady increase in electricity needs above the global level. While there is no question that demand will remain strong over the next two decades, what remains to be seen is what kind of energy matrix will be used to meet that appetite and what will be the investments going into the industry. This report makes an attempt to answer these critical questions by taking a deep look into the demand and supply side of the industry. To this end, it will seek to (i) identify the amount of demand growth until 2040, (ii) project the electricity generation matrix by each energy source, and (iii) determine the investment requirements by source, based on cost efficiency criteria, for regulators and utilities’ consideration.

Sustainable Development of Biofuels in Latin America and the Caribbean

Sustainable Development of Biofuels in Latin America and the Caribbean PDF Author: Barry D. Solomon
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461492750
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
This book examines recent developments in Latin American biofuel production. Taking “sustainable development” as a central theme, each chapter considers one country in the region and explores how biofuel production is evolving given concerns about food sovereignty, trade and other social issues. Environmental conservation, as well as an increasingly complex and globalized economic structure, Is also taken into account. The contributions to this volume critically explore the ways in which biofuel production in Latin America impact social, economic and environmental systems: the so-called “three pillars of sustainability". Numerous stakeholders, drawn from government, industry, civil society and academia have attempted to define “Sustainable Development” in the context of biofuel production and to operationalize it through a series of principles, criteria, and highly specific indicators. Nevertheless, it remains a fluid and contested concept with deep political and social ramifications, which each chapter explores in detail.
