En regiones aridas de Mexico, donde el agua es escasa y se extrae de pozos profundos, el exceso de concentracion de fluor de forma natural en el agua para consumo humano, ha provocado un problema de salud publica, la fluorosis dental. La Ciudad de Hermosillo, Sonora presenta riesgo en zonas donde la concentracion de fluor en agua potable es muy alta, con valores hasta 7.8 mgL-1, el contenido maximo por normatividad debe ser 1.5 mgL-1. Ante la necesidad de eliminar el exceso de fluor, se planteo como alternativa el uso de zeolitas naturales, minerales abundantes y disponibles en el Estado de Sonora, con bajo costo. En este estudio, se propone tratamiento de acidificacion a las zeolitas para mejorar adsorcion de fluoruros, asi como condiciones de operacion para eliminar o alcanzar la concentracion optima de fluor en agua potable. Por lo tanto, se espera que las Instituciones gubernamentales unifiquen criterios sobre presencia de fluoruros en el agua potable que se abastece para consumo humano, para evitar riesgos a la salud especialmente en la poblacion infantil."

El fluor es conocido como un contaminante inorganico que se encuentra presente en el agua de consumo humano en distintos lugares del mundo. Mexico no es la excepcion ya que se ha detectado la presencia de fluor en extensas zonas al norte del pais. La ciudad de Chihuahua esta situada al norte de Mexico, en un punto geografico correspondiente a una zona desertica en la que como caracteristica particular destaca su baja precipitacion pluvial. La mayor parte del agua que se suministra a la poblacion es agua subterranea, siendo esta dependiente de los estratos litologicos que a su vez influyen de terminantemente en la calidad misma de este recurso. En algunas fuentes de suministro de agua de la ciudad se han observado concentraciones de fluor superiores al nivel maximo permitido por la Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM-127-SSA1-1994) que es de 1.5 mg/L. Investigaciones realizadas han demostrado que concentraciones por encima de dicho nivel pueden provocar fluorosis dental y que concentraciones mayores de 4.0 mg/L producen una afeccion a los huesos conocida como osteoesclerosis. En este estudio se analizan diferentes metodos de tratamiento para la eliminacion de fluor en agua potable.
