Book Description
This book examines the evolution of a distinctive Yoruba community, Remo, and the central role played in this process by the Remo-born Nationalist and Yoruba leader Obafemi Awolowo (1909-87). Since the Nineteenth Century, popular participation has played an important role in challenging or confirming local hierarchies in Remo. This historical dynamic had a significant impact on Awolowo's vision both for Yoruba and Nigerian politics. When he moved into national politics in the 1950s, his career at the national level also gave him the opportunity to shape Remo's political identity. Awolowo was both a product and a producer of Remo politics.Based on a subtle analysis of local-level politics, this book argues that traditional and modern participatory structures play an important role both in Yoruba politics and in the African postcolonial state. At the same time, its focus on Awolowo makes an important contribution to the scholarly debate on one of Nigeria's most important politicians.

San Remo Drive
Author: Leslie Epstein
Publisher: Other Press, LLC
ISBN: 1590514319
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 300
Book Description
"One of the four best Hollywood novels ever written." —Elizabeth Frank, New York Times Book Review "Epstein is a master storyteller at the height of his powers." —Jonathan Kirsch, Los Angeles Times Book Review "Mr. Epstein effortlessly captures the magic of a Hollywood childhood . . . San Remo Drive is a haunting and deeply affecting book." —Michiko Kakutani, New York Times Leslie Epstein's bestselling new novel is composed of five interrelated episodes, in each of which a germ of childhood experience is elaborated by the mature imagination of one of this country's most distinguished writers of fiction. Richard Jacobi, the narrator of these reflections, invites us to revisit the crucial experiences of his youth: driving to Malibu to meet the man determined to marry his mother; on vacation in the Mohave, while his father, the famed Hollywood figure Norman Jacobi and Lotte, his mother, must deal with the terrible consequences of Norman's testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities; exploring how a night in a bar and brothel in Tijuana becomes linked to the spiritual growth of his brother, Bartie, who is surely destined to be one of the most memorable and endearing characters in modern literature; viewing a precarious initiation into sexuality that will mark forever the way an artist sees the world and does his work. This is, then, a novel written from memory, in the same sense that the Schubert sonatas that attract Lotte to her baby grand are played from memory—that is, by heart.

Summer in San Remo
Author: Evonne Wareham
Publisher: Choc Lit Limited
ISBN: 1781892210
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 195
Book Description
Mystery, sparkling humor, and second-chance romance on the Mediterranean make for “the perfect summer read” (Old Victorian Quill). Making ends meet with her concierge service in Somerset, England, keeps Cassie Travers on her toes. As well-equipped (and just a little anxious) as she is to fulfill any request, her newest commission is the strangest ever: find herself a husband in twenty-four-hours and masquerade as a happy couple to secure the client’s hefty inheritance. Sounding less like a task than an outrageous scheme, she still can’t say no. All Cassie needs now is a man who’ll say yes. Even if it’s one she never wanted to see again. Twelve years ago, Det. Jake McQuire broke Cassie’s heart. Imagine his surprise when his old flame is now asking to be his wife. And fast. It pays well, it’s strictly business (right?), and best of all, it’s whisking them off to a luxurious villa on the Italian Riviera. But Cassie and Jake soon find themselves in something hotter than the San Remo sun: a mystery that’s drawing them into danger. It’s also rekindling a romance that’s making their hearts beat just as fast.
