Family Narratives and the Development of an Autobiographical Self PDF Author: Robyn Fivush
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429649908

Pages : 205

Book Description
Stories are central to our world. We form our families, our communities, and our nations through stories. It is through stories of our everyday experiences that each of us constructs an autobiographical self, a narrative identity, that confers a sense of coherence and meaning to our individual lives. In this volume, Robyn Fivush describes how this deeply personal autobiographical self is socially and culturally constructed. Family Narratives and the Development of an Autobiographical Self demonstrates that, through participating in family reminiscing, in which adults help children learn the forms and functions of talking about the past, young children come to understand and evaluate their experiences, and create a sense of self defined through individual and family stories that provide an anchor for understanding self, others, and the world. Fivush draws on three decades of research, from her own lab and from others, to demonstrate the critical role that family stories and family storytelling play in child development and outcome. This volume is essential reading for students and researchers interested in psychology, human development, and family studies.

Outside Wonderland

Outside Wonderland PDF Author: Lorna Jane Cook
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
ISBN: 1429965851
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Alice, Griffin, and Dinah Stenen's mother and father died tragically when they were quite young. The loss haunts them into adulthood. Alice is a stage actress in New York who can't commit to a relationship. When she meets Ian she's smitten, but suspects it's Ian's four-year-old son that really captivates her. Griffin and his longtime partner are settled into a contented domesticity, however Theo's insistence that they adopt a child throws Griffin into a panic. When he refuses to cooperate, the crack in their relationship widens. Dinah, the youngest, has a short, passionate love affair that leaves her pregnant and alone when she discovers the father is engaged to someone else. The three look to each other for support during this rough period but they falter. What they don't know is that their parents are watching them from a place outside time and space--worrying, reminiscing, and perhaps guiding their children as each makes their tentative way towards happiness. In luminous prose, Cook tells the story of these tender souls and a love that knows no boundaries.

Like Barbara Eden. But on something. Like crystal meth.” —Alec Baldwin

Adventures In Wonderland

Adventures In Wonderland PDF Author: Sheryl Garratt
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781838063351
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
The definitive history of the acid house explosion and its reverberations across popular culture, Adventures In Wonderland has been out of print for more than 20 years. This new edition has been updated slightly, with a new introduction and final chapter. This is the acid house and rave explosion, as told by the people who lived it: door staff, dancers and drug dealers; gangsters, blaggers and promoters. From the real stories behind the huge illegal raves of 1989 to insider accounts from DJs such as Norman Jay, Trevor Nelson, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Graeme Park, Mike Pickering, Carl Cox, Sasha and John Digweed. But this isn't just a book about the music. It's about being up for it. Out of it. And right in the middle of it. It's about the Paradise Garage in New York, about dancing under the stars in Ibiza or Goa, about the house we built in the UK at Future, Shoom, Spectrum. Clink Street and the Haçienda. It's about Ecstasy and community and a scene that grew with breath-taking speed because we needed to feel that the world was changing. It's about dodging the police to get the party started, and the joy of dancing all night in the British countryside, with thousands of others on the same high. About Madchester, Blackburn, and a new understanding between rock and dance music. And about what came after, from drum'n'bass to the rise of superclubs such as Ministry of Sound, Renaissance and Cream. But most of all, it's about having the time of your life. And who wouldn't want that? "Adventures In Wonderland is the ultimate, definitive account of the scene. Precise factually and perfectly articulated, it transports the reader to that unique, life-changing period. Sheryl Garratt was there, reporting from the core energy of the scene that we collectively created." - Danny Rampling "Gripping and vivid.. Garratt writes with the style and attitude of the feistiest club diva... Her personal memories are wedged between layers of insightful comment and thorough research." - The Times "She has spoken to everyone involved - from the Chicago DJs of the 80s to the rave promoters and club moguls of the 90s ¬ and shows that it's possible to write popular culture without insulting our intelligence." - Daily Mirror "The definitive account of contemporary dance culture.. If you weren't at Shoom in '87, then this is the best way to make up for it." - The Face Long-listed for the 2021 Penderyn Prize for music books.

The Nineteenth-Century Child and Consumer Culture

The Nineteenth-Century Child and Consumer Culture PDF Author: Dennis Denisoff
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351884956
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 379

Book Description
During the rise of consumer culture in the nineteenth century, children and childhood were called on to fulfill a range of important roles. In addition to being consumers themselves, the young functioned as both 'goods' to be used and consumed by adults and as proof that middle-class materialist ventures were assisting in the formation of a more ethical society. Children also provided necessary labor and raw material for industry. This diverse collection addresses the roles assigned to children in the context of nineteenth-century consumer culture, at the same time that it remains steadfast in recognizing that the young did not simply exist within adult-articulated cultural contexts but were agents in their formation. Topics include toys and middle-class childhood; boyhood and toy theater; child performers on the Victorian stage; gender, sexuality and consumerism; imperialism in adventure fiction; the idealization of childhood as a form of adult entertainment and self-flattery; the commercialization of orphans; and the economics behind formulations of child poverty. Together, the essays demonstrate the rising investment both children and adults made in commodities as sources of identity and human worth.
