Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of Methodism in West Jersey This work has increased, as our researches have been extended, until we have been forced to the conclusion that one book could not contain the matter we ought to exhibit; and, therefore, we send forth this volume with the understanding that if encouragement be afforded, a second may be expected in due time. The difficulty necessarily attendant upon the collection of material for the work, has been made more trying to the writer by a feeble state of health. But if we cannot do all we desire, from this, or any other cause, we shall do that which we can. We have made every effort to secure accuracy in the details of our narrative; and although we cannot hope to have avoided errors entirely, we are assured that we have fallen into none against which care and pains could guard us. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of Early Free Methodism AT the earnest request of the editor of the Free Methodist much of the matter contained in the follow ing pages was originally prepared for publication in that paper. The writer had no thought that the articles would ever appear in book form. But as many of the readers of the sketches, as they appeared in the Free Methodist, have expressed a desire to have them in a more convenient and durable form I have by advice of our publishing agents consented to their publication, and have revised the matter as it origi nally appeared, adding several entirely new chapters. As to literary merit these pages are not open to criticism since no claim in that direction is made. Another volume giving a more general account of the work East and West is contemplated. Book Description
Excerpt from The Round Preacher, or Reminiscences of Methodist Circuit Life It is with mingled feelings that the Second Edition of the Round Preacher is issued. The extensive sale which the work has commanded, is ample evidence that the subject is one of no slight importance. N otwith standing the many criticisms which have appeared upon it, (favourable and otherwise) it has not been deem ed advisable to make any material alterations, and for the best of all reasons, that facts, however clothed, are still facts, and cannot be overthrown. It is not by this intended to imply that the writer is nnw to profit by the suggestions and hints which have been thrown out, but as another work is in preparation which may cast additional light upon the present, he will reserve the main portion of his apology until then. Still it may be advisable to notice what he conceives to be the mistakes of those who are not conversant with the workings of modern Methodism. The peculiar tendencies and workings of the system have heretofore been calmly stated, and deliberately. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences, Historical and Biographical, of Sixty-Four Years in the Ministry Fob many years, and by many persons, including bishops, editors, and others, I have been importuned to publish the substance of my records and recollec tions of the Methodism of my day. It was judged that my great age, my intimate relations with Bishop Asbury, and my acquaintance with other pioneers and fathers of the Church, would enable me thus to preserve much desirable information which would otherwise soon be forgotten. In 1847 the New Jersey Conference took action on the subject, and appointed a committee to confer with me in respect to my journals and other papem, and aid in preparing them for publication. The com mittee was a very competent one, but the members were too widely separated for any effectual result. I had concluded to abandon the design, and this volume would probably never have seen the light had not the Rev. J. B. Wakeley come to my help. Book Description
Excerpt from Sunset Memories Not that I am altogether a novice in authorship; but' the project of preparing this larger and more personal volume required far greater courage than any previous attempt in that line. Yet for this undertaking there came to me a conscious warrant in the thought that my life and ministry had been so interwoven with the his tory of the Methodist Episcopal Church, especially those portions of it represented by the Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Newark Conferences, that much of what I should write would of necessity possess far more than a mere local and personal interest. Grant and Lee

Grant and Lee PDF Author: Edward H. Bonekemper, III
Publisher: Regnery Publishing
ISBN: 162157010X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 722

Book Description
Grant and Lee: Victorious American and Vanquished Virginian is a comprehensive, multi-theater, war-long comparison of the command skills of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Written by Edward H. Bonekemper III, Grant and Lee clarifies the impact both generals had on the outcome of the Civil War—namely, the assistance that Lee provided to Grant by Lee's excessive casualties in Virginia, the consequent drain of Confederate resources from Grant's battlefronts, and Lee's refusal and delay of reinforcements to the combat areas where Grant was operating. The reader will be left astounded by the level of aggression both generals employed to secure victory for their respective causes, as Bonekemper demonstrates that Grant was a national general whose tactics were consistent with acheiving Union victory, whereas Lee's own priorities constantly undermined the Confederacy's chances of winning the war. Building on detailed accounts of both generals' major campaigns and battles, this book provides a detailed comparison of the primary military and personal traits of the two men. That analysis supports the preface discussion and the chapter-by-chapter conclusions that Grant did what the North needed to do to win the war: be aggressive, eliminate enemy armies, and do so with minimal casualties (154,000), while Lee was too offensive for the undermanned Confederacy, suffered intolerable casualties (209,000), and allowed his obsession with the Commonwealth of Virginia to obscure the broader interests of the Confederacy. In addition, readers will find interest in the 18 highly detailed and revealing battle maps, as well as in a comprehensive set of appendices that describes the casualties incurred by each army, battle by battle.

Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials of the Introduction of Methodism Into the Eastern States: Comprising Biographical Notices of Its Early Preachers, Sketches of Its First Churches, and Reminiscences of Its Early Struggles and Successes As many important facts in the work have been derived from original sources, and publications out of print, the author has chosen to let his authorities speak for themselves, to a consider able extent. And as he is the first who has written, largely, on the local history of Methodism in New England, he has given abundant marginal references, both to verify his statements and to aid further researches, Should they hereafter be undertaken. In a subsequent volume, he hopes to continue the narrative through periods of more varied and more interesting events.
