His death had nothing of the romance attaching to that of Lincoln, but not less than the martyred President was he a victim of the war of oligarchy on democracy, which ended in the spring of 1865. What I have already said in my recollections of the war will have given some indication of his promptitude, his restless energy, and self-sacrifice; but his life is still to be written, and, if well done, will put him where he belongs, among the very first and best of those who carried us through. Beginning as a radical, he showed his qualities when the responsibility was put upon him, and became almost a conservative. In fact, Wendell Phillips openly denounced him as having gone over to the enemy. In my judgment, he was nearer right than any other man of his day, in public life. One of the things which must have taken most out of him was the rustiness of the engine he wassuddenly called on to run at high pressure.
