Book Description
Excerpt from Face Value: Autobiography of the Portrait Painter How great his influence has been it is impossible to say; as a portrait painter of great distinction, as a designer and instructor in design, as a counsellor to manufacturers and to merchants, as the head of the Art Department of Hunter College; he has sown in a large field, and making allowances for all seed that did not quicken, the harvest must have been large. That the sower has taken joy of his task is manifest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Personal Reminiscences (Classic Reprint)

Personal Reminiscences (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Henry Fothergill Chorley
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781333137205
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences Chorley differed in nothing from ordinary children, ex cept, perhaps, in his early fondness for music, which he probably inherited from his mother, who had a sweet but unformed voice, and a piano-forte, upon which She played but indifferently. He could not remember when or where he began to associate the printed symbols with the popu lar sounds of music, but before he could put his hand on the piano he could read the notes somehow, and could represent to himself somehow that which they signified. The Chorleys moved to Liverpool in 1819, and Henry and his brothers were placed at the school of the Royal Institution, where little actually was taught, save Latin and Greek an odd training for boys among which ninety out of the hundred were to make their way in commercial life. By some favor he was admitted a year or two before he ought to have been: and no favor did it prove, so far as happiness was concerned, for being the smallest, most nervous creature in the place, inexpert at any game, and shabbily dressed, and being also credited with some quick ness, he was a good deal plagued and rudely treated by the elder boys not so much disliked as cruelly teased, and in great difficulties as to the finding a playmate or a com rade. Years after, he used to wake up from a sort of night mare dream that he was going to school, and had not his exercise ready. He learned Greek with greater relish than Latin, his favorite authors being Herodotus, and Euripides, whose Hecuba he translated from beginning to end for his own pleasure. Robert Feke

Book Description
Excerpt from Robert Feke: The Early Newport Portrait Painter and the Beginnings of Colonial Painting It is superfluous, in this presence, to say that the early colonists in this country found but small opportunity, and discovered but little inclination, for the practice of the Fine Arts. They were dedicated to toil and hardship, subject to privations, hurt by the inclemencies of a strange sky, forced to create their farms and homesteads by conquest of the forests, exposed to countless perils from the wild beasts and from the hostile savages whom they had dispossessed of the soil. They had no time to develop or to practice art. Their energies were consumed by the strenuous exertions through which they nourished, clothed and sheltered their bodies and defended their lives. They had often but little to offer as a reward or emolument to the artist, if any artist could have been found to serve them. Beyond these limitations from without, the colonists, at least those of British origin, were not people whose sentiments and tastes were favorable to art. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, outside of a few favored and limited areas, were, on the whole, a time in which art was declining in Europe. The brilliant achievements of painting in Holland, Flanders and Spain in the seventeenth century, were not accompanied by any equal achievements in architecture and sculpture. French art was grandiose, rather than great, or at its best was gay and pleasing through a lively and natural manner of treating trivial themes. Only a few English artists earned permanent eminence, and these in the eighteenth century, mainly in the one art of painting, in which portrait painting bulked conspicuously.
