Excerpt from Reminiscences, Addresses, and Essays, Vol. 1 At the request of the widow of Dr. Francis Lieber, I have undertaken to examine and arrange for publication some of his less extended, I can hardly call them his less important, writings. The task, though a pleasant one, was not easy, for the papers submitted to me were voluminous, related to a great variety of subjects, and were originally printed in divers forms during a period of literary activity which extended through almost fifty years. Moreover, while much that he wrote was upon transient topics, not much was trivial. He brought to the discussion of local and temporary questions rich stores of learning and habits of philosophical thought. Even in those essays and paragraphs which are humorous there is a grave and substantial foundation. He was thoroughly earnest in that which was least and in that which was most. He was zealous in his desire to promote the highest good of modern society by a study of the past, by a comparison of existing institutions and of the most recent acts of legislation in different countries, and by applying the fundamental principles of justice - of rights and of duties - to the passing events in America and Europe. There is consequently very little which he printed in pamphlets, magazines, or newspapers which would not be valued by a student of political science, interested in the lessons to be derived from the history of the United States. Excerpt from Reminiscences, Vol. 1 of 2 Material of such a character makes my duty in one respect an easy one. I have not to relate Mr. Carlyle's history, or describe his character. He is his own biographer, and paints his own portrait. But another difficulty arises from the extent of the resources thrown open to me. His own letters are as full of matter as the richest of his published works. His friends were not common men, and in writing to him they wrote their best. Of the many thousand letters in my possession, there is hardly one which, either on its special merits or through its connec tion with something which concerned him, does not deserve to be printed. Selection is indispensable; a middle way must be struck between too much and too little. Excerpt from Essays, Reviews, and Addresses The following papers are divided into volumes according to subject, and, within each volume, disposed in the order of time; the former, to facilitate reference; the latter, to preserve the clue of literary history. They thus form, as a whole, an autobiographical commentary on the larger systematic writings for which they have gradually prepared the way. Running as they do through the changes of thre score years, they can lay no claim to logical consistency. I can only hope that beneath the varying complexion of their thought some intelligible moral continuity may be traced, leading in the end to a View of life more coherent and less defective than was presented at the beginning. Most of the papers being strictly occasional, that is, rela tive to the events and ideas of their time, have interest, if at all, as reproducing some vanished aspect of public senti ment or social movement. They are left, therefore, to speak the feeling of their day, without any attempt, by soften ing its ignorances or removing its misjudgments, to correct it to the standard of the present intellectual latitude. A few very early essays have been excluded, as too pervasively steeped in the spirit of a discarded philosophy; but else, papers have been marked for rejection only where the interest was obsolete, or not desirable to revive.
