Excerpt from A Woodside Reminiscence IN the year 1914, at the end of a winter's day in Springfield, Massachusetts, having completed the business which I had in hand, and not desiring to return to the home of the friend with whom I was visiting, at so early an hour, I wandered along the main street of the city, towards the outskirts. Seeing a sign Antique Furniture displayed over the entrance to an old-fashioned colonial house, I wandered in - more with the idea of escaping the cold air and falling snow than with any expectation of finding anything of particular interest. As I entered, I saw seated by a stove at the farther end of the room, two men evidently well advanced in years. One of them came forward and in a very courteous man ner asked how he could serve me. I replied that I was idly looking about and if he would grant me the privilege of looking over what he had, though I probably would not purchase anything, I should appreciate his courtesy. He immediately replied that I should make myself at home and returned to his friend by the stove. I wandered around the place, seeing the usual assort ment displayed in places of that character - composed mostly of old-fashioned warming pans, flax wheels, and irons, etc. Finally, arriving close to where the two men were seated, I heard the proprietor say to his visitor: Do you expect to go back again to that country? Excerpt from Obliviscence and Reminiscence It is generally believed that when one attempts to memorise a passage of poetry the power to reproduce it is at its greatest immediately after. Thenceforth the power is supposed to undergo a gradual process of decay and it is assumed that the longer the lapse of time between the act of learning and the act of reproduction, the more difficult and the less accurate is the reproduction likely to be. And, Speaking generally, whatever may be the nature of the traces left in our minds by our experiences, those traces gradually fade, and the curve of remembering has but one tendency - a downward tendency. Allowing for certain uctuations in memory due to ill-health and fatigue, it will readily be admitted that the strongest and most general tendency among our unrevived memories is this tendency towards oblivion. They are less and less easily reproducible. But this is not the only tendency. Obliviscence is at least partly counteracted by an opposing tendency towards reminiscence. We not only tend to forget what we have once remembered, but we also tend to remember what we have once forgotten. And although we associate reminiscence, in the loose and popular sense of the word, with old age, 'in the strict sense of the word in which it is here used - in the sense of remembering the forgotten - it is really more characteristic of the young. At least it is so when it refers to recently acquired knowledge. When a child has memorised, say, a piece of poetry, and has dismissed it from his mind, the period of gradual forget fulness is as a rule preceded by a period of gradual improvement. And the object of this monograph is to present and discuss evidence as to the nature and extent of this recuperative aspect of memory, this increase in reproducibility, this power which not merely arrests the passage of our memories towards forgetfulness, but drives them back towards ready and accurate recall. Excerpt from A Reminiscence of the Early Days Mccarthy at that time kept a sort of general store on Division street, and my father was often paid for his work by getting an order on this store, where he would get such things as he most needed. I have often heard my father say that he cut cordwood many a day for three York shillings a cord. That in our day would be thirty seven and a half cents. The old seminary or college, or, as it was afterward called, the Uppe1 Canada Academy, was in course of erection, also the first Presbyterian church. It was situated between what is now known as Ontario and William streets, fronting on William street. This church was built of gray stone. The first minister who labored here was the Rev. Thomas Alexander. Here in the little burying ground by the old stone Kirk reposes the dust of many of the early pioneers of those days. I have heard my parents and others say that it was so wet and swampy that when a grave was dug it would fill up with water, and the coffin would'have to be lowered down in this - there to take their last long repose. The old church has been pulled down for some years, and not one stone left upon another to tell where it once stood. I have often thought that the people of Cobourg made a great mistake when they did away with this time-honored building. It should have been left as an old landmark and monument to the memory of those early pioneers whose ashes repose in the old Kirkyard. It was here they met together, a small band of faithful worshippers whose names should ever be held in sacred remembrance by all their de scendants for generations to come. What a debt we owe to those worthy men and women who braved the ocean's storms, the hardships, the separation from home and friends coming to this country - then an almost unbroken forest - hewing out for themselves and children homes in the new land. With but little of this world's wealth, poor, but honest and persevering. Laying the foundation of our country's prosperity and the privileges we now enjoy are not so much our doing and dar ing as theirs, and we should cherish their memories with rev erence and gratitude.
