Book Description
"He knew things about me that no one could. His explanation was impossible, but the alternatives were worse..." After putting everything on hold to care for her dying father, Ivy Nichols feels lonely and disconnected. She's struggling to jump in and start again--especially when it comes to dating. The mysterious William Cole walks into her life, like a beacon of light in a fog. He's sensual and captivating--awakening Ivy in ways she's never experienced before. But he knows things about her--deeply personal things. His story is unbelievable, but the truth might be worse. Her friends insist he's either a con artist, or he's crazy. With her heart on the line, Ivy has to decide who--and what--she believes. The rational explanation from her trusted friends? Or the impossible story from the man without a past? The man who swears he will do anything to protect her. One thing she is sure of--William doesn't just know facts about her life. He knows her, inside and out. He knows her as intimately as if he's spent every moment of his life loving her. And according to him, he has. Author's note: a steamy, stand-alone contemporary romance with a bit of suspense and a mysterious twist. It will make you question what you know about love, chance, and fate, and keep you turning the pages to find the answer to one question. Who is William Cole?

White Ivy

White Ivy PDF Author: Susie Yang
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1982100613
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
“A truly addictive read” (Glamour) about how a young woman’s crush on a privileged former classmate becomes a story of love, lies, and dark obsession, offering stark insights into the immigrant experience, as it hurtles to its electrifying ending in this “twisty, unputdownable, psychological thriller” (People). Ivy Lin is a thief and a liar—but you’d never know it by looking at her. Raised outside of Boston, Ivy’s immigrant grandmother relies on Ivy’s mild appearance for cover as she teaches her granddaughter how to pilfer items from yard sales and second-hand shops. Thieving allows Ivy to accumulate the trappings of a suburban teen—and, most importantly, to attract the attention of Gideon Speyer, the golden boy of a wealthy political family. But when Ivy’s mother discovers her trespasses, punishment is swift and Ivy is sent to China, and her dream instantly evaporates. Years later, Ivy has grown into a poised yet restless young woman, haunted by her conflicting feelings about her upbringing and her family. Back in Boston, when Ivy bumps into Sylvia Speyer, Gideon’s sister, a reconnection with Gideon seems not only inevitable—it feels like fate. Slowly, Ivy sinks her claws into Gideon and the entire Speyer clan by attending fancy dinners, and weekend getaways to the cape. But just as Ivy is about to have everything she’s ever wanted, a ghost from her past resurfaces, threatening the nearly perfect life she’s worked so hard to build. Filled with surprising twists and a nuanced exploration of class and race, White Ivy is a “highly entertaining,” (The Washington Post) “propulsive debut” (San Francisco Chronicle) that offers a glimpse into the dark side of a woman who yearns for success at any cost.

Remembering the Kanji, Volume 1

Remembering the Kanji, Volume 1 PDF Author: James W. Heisig
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 0824831659
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 468

Book Description
The aim of this book is to provide the student of Japanese with a simple method for correlating the writing and the meaning of Japanese characters in such a way as to make them both easy to remember. It is intended not only for the beginner, but also for the more advanced student looking for some relief from the constant frustration of how to write the kanji and some way to systematize what he or she already knows. The author begins with writing because--contrary to first impressions--it is in fact the simpler of the two. He abandons the traditional method of ordering the kanji according to their frequency of use and organizes them according to their component parts or "primitive elements." Assigning each of these parts a distinct meaning with its own distinct image, the student is led to harness the powers of "imaginative memory" to learn the various combinations that result. In addition, each kanji is given its own key word to represent the meaning, or one of the principal meanings, of that character. These key words provide the setting for a particular kanji's "story," whose protagonists are the primitive elements. In this way, students are able to complete in a few short months a task that would otherwise take years. Armed with the same skills as Chinese or Korean students, who know the meaning and writing of the kanji but not their pronunciation in Japanese, they are now in a much better position to learn to read (which is treated in a separate volume). Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home

Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home PDF Author: Peter Hughes Jachimiak
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317066707
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
Using an innovative auto-ethnographic approach to investigate the otherness of the places that make up the childhood home and its neighbourhood in relation to memory-derived and memory-imbued cultural geographies, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home is concerned with childhood spaces and children's perspectives of those spaces and, consequentially, with the personalised locations that make up the childhood family home and its immediate surroundings (such as the garden, the street, etc.). Whilst this book is primarily structured by the author's memories of living in his own Welsh childhood home during the 1970s - that is, the auto-ethnographic framework - it is as much about living anywhere amid the remembered cultural remnants of the past as it is immersing oneself in cultural geographies of the here-and-now. As a result, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home is part of the ongoing pursuit by cultural geographers to provide a personal exploration of the pluralities of shared landscapes, whereby such an engagement with space and place aid our construction of cognitive maps of meaning that, in turn, manifest themselves as both individual and collective cultural experiences. Furthermore, touching upon our co-habiting of ghost topologies, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home also encourages a critical exploration of children’s spirituality amid the haunted cultural and geographical spaces and places of a house and its neighbourhood: the cellar, hallway, parlour, stairs, bedroom, attic, shops, cemeteries, and so on.

All Things Human

All Things Human PDF Author: Stuart Benton
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 159077471X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
Here is a remarkable vintage tour-de-force of the Fifties, in which Stuart Benton explores the range of human experience from the sublime to the exotically degrading. Marriage, illicit love, the uneasy relationship between children and parents, business success and failure, a trial for murder, a descent into the underworld of society, and later ascent to the delights of a swiftly-moving, jaded society set—all these can be found in the fabric of All Things Human. John Stuart Kent is a millionaire banker and aesthete, living out the Indian Summer of his life as the shape of his future is altered by five extraordinary women: Helen, his young wife, a resentful Galatea whose pathological jealousy cools their relationship. Sylvia, a fascinating and magnanimous Wagnerian singer, with flaming red hair and a fresh attitude toward love. Aimee, a courtesan, par excellence. Edda, Kent’s secretary, sweet, young and unashamed who fumbles into scandalous catastrophe. Ivy, a sophisticate of enormous wealth and esoteric accomplishments. John Stuart Kent endures a Faust-like descent to a modern, mechanized Hell, experiencing all the humiliations and betrayals of modern society and its strange criminal procedures on his way. In the fight for his good name and his liberty, Kent must use all of his charm and wit, and enlist the help of a few friends, or he could be stuck in the abyss of the criminal system forever.
