Book Description
Excerpt from Remains of the Prehistoric Age in England Perhaps it may be permissible and even advisable to say a word at this point about these lists. They are strictly trial-lists, and though very great pains have been taken to make them accurate and complete, no one can be better aware than their author that, from the nature of things, they must necessarily suffer from sins of commission and omission. In the body of the book the author has tried as far as possible to describe objects which he has himself seen and studied, but it is obviously impossible for any one person to have seen and checked all the places mentioned in the lists. The lists have been compiled from the Ordnance Map, from Murray's and other County Handbooks, from Proceedings of various societies, and from other sources. After much considera tion, and acting on the advice of competent authorities, it has been decided that the lists shall appear, and it is hoped that they may be at least useful as a basis for a more perfect compilation in the future. Atlas of Prehistoric Britain

Atlas of Prehistoric Britain PDF Author: John Manley
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
Megalithic cairns, ancient earthworks, Bronze Age burial chambers, Stonehenge--these mysterious, awe-inspiring monuments in their remote British settings have long exercised a powerful hold on people's imagination. In this lavishly illustrated atlas, John Manley provides a beautiful and highly informative account of prehistoric British culture, revealing how the evidence of monuments, excavations and artefacts sheds light on the technological development, social organization, military exploits, and religious practices of these long-departed peoples. Ranging from 300,000 B.C. and the earliest indications of prehistoric culture, to the final Roman conquest in 43 A.D., and covering Wales, Scotland, and Ireland as well as England, Manley makes use of the latest research in archeaology to interpret Britain's prehistoric heritage for the nonspecialist reader. He describes the earliest bands who hunted artic fox, woolly rhinoceros, and mammoth and often lived in caves such as Picken's Hole in Somerset; the first farming communities dating back to 4000 B.C.; the construction of Stonehenge, which required thousands of workers to drag huge sandstone blocks across the countryside; and the hill-top settlements, or hillforts, and the warrior-chiefs who ruled them. The maps, site plans and reconstruction drawings have been specially commissioned to combine clarity with an attractive style, and they are closely integrated with Manley's text. The photographs are particularly striking; they capture the magic and haunting presence of the past. Beautifully illustrated, vividly narrated, and completely up to date, The Atlas interprets and celebrates Britain's amazingly rich prehistoric heritage. It will enthrall anyone fascinated by ancient ruins, Stonehenge, and the mysteries of the past.

The Lower and Middle Palaeolithic Periods in Britain

The Lower and Middle Palaeolithic Periods in Britain PDF Author: Derek A. Roe
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317600231
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 516

Book Description
This book deals with the earliest period of human settlement in Britain, proposing a series of archaeological stages for the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic periods. An introduction on the problems and methods of studying the Palaeolithic and Pleistocene periods leads into the technical argument, a sequence of development derived from evidence of stone artefacts and other signs of human activity at stratified sites in south-east England. Materials from all occupied parts of Britain are related to this basic sequence and, stressing that Britain lay on the edge of the Palaeolithic world, the author also brings in essential evidence from Europe and farther afield. The final chapter suggests the probable way of life of human groups in this period. This broad survey synthesises material from widely scattered sources including museums from all over Britain and has an extensive bibliography. Originally published in 1981.
