Book Description
Excerpt from Remains Historical and Literary Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 3 HE fifty-two Wills and Inventories, printed in this volume, were mostly 00pied from the originals at Chester by the late Rev. G. J piccope (a. Few having been copied by his father the Rev. J piccope), and with one exception, they occur in volumes 8 and 9 of the Piccope mss., now in the Chetham Library, Manchester. They were omitted, probably from want of room, from the three volumes of Wills and Inventories, edited by the Rev. G. J Piccope, and printed for this Society in 1857, 1860 and 1861. There are many very interesting wills among them, and several full and curious inventories. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Remains Historical Literary Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 9 The MSS. here printed are a portion of a much larger collection made by several generations of the family of Norris, of Speke. These documents are said to have been distributed when the estate, fifty years ago, passed into the hands of Mr. Watt. They have since fallen into the hands of auctioneers, booksellers, and virtuosi, and are now diminished in number, and separated beyond the possibility of ever again being collected so as to form a connected series. Fortunately the Corporation of Liverpool, and Mr. Norris, of Manchester, are the possessors of many of the Papers, and the Chetham Society have to acknowledge the very liberal manner with which these MSS. have been placed at their disposal for publication. A few of the earlier documents are printed, but the great interest of the book is the insight which it affords into the characters and actions of the men, who at the close of the seventeeenth, and the beginning of the succeeding century, founded Liverpool. Defoe, whose visit is alluded to in the following correspondence, (1705, ) has left on record his surprise at the change which this little community of merchants had effected, though opposed by what appeared to him almost insurmountable natural difficulties. This is not very precise as to the year when he had seen this ex treme age, and, unluckily, the account of the funeral wants the date of the year. Book Description
Excerpt from Remains, Historical and Literary, Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 33 The Wills now submitted to the Members of the chetram society were transcribed by the late Rev. John piccope, m.a., Incumbent of Farndon. From the Archives in the Ecclesiastical Court of Chester. By the kind permission of the Rev. Henry raikes, m.a., late Chancellor of the Diocese, he had access to the various documents in the Registry, a privilege of which his peculiar taste for such pursuits and his intimate acquaintance with the pedigrees of Lancashire and Cheshire families, induced him eagerly to avail himself. The entire collection, from which the present volume is taken, consists of nearly three hundred wills and inventories, embracing every class of society in the two counties palatine of Lancaster and Chester. They were originally selected with a view to their future publication by the Society, but a protracted illness unfortunately pre vented my father's hopes being realised during his lifetime.
