Book Description
Religion and spirituality can serve both as source of comfort and struggle (Exline, 2013; Exline & Rose, 2013). The positive effects of religion and spirituality on people's mental and physical health are well established (Koenig, King, & Carson, 2012), and in the past decade, scholarly interest in religious and spiritual (R/S) struggles has increased. Several studies have demonstrated that R/S struggles are linked with various indicators of psychological adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, depressive and anxious symptoms) and spiritual adjustment (e.g., instability in perceived relationship to God and authoritarian God representations; Exline, 2013; Exline & Rose, 2013). However, gaps remain in the literature on R/S struggles. The vast majority of studies are cross-sectional, highlighting the need for longitudinal studies. Furthermore, although many of the existing studies focus on R/S struggles among college students, to date no studies have focused exclusively on R/S struggles among college students at Christian institutions. The current longitudinal study investigated R/S struggles of undergraduate students at Wheaton College (IL), a prototypical member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Results indicated that among Wheaton undergraduates, R/S struggles are positively related to depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and authoritarian God representations, and they are negatively related to spiritual adjustment and benevolent God representations. Multiple regression analyses revealed these psychological and spiritual variables collectively predict concurrent and subsequent R/S struggles (R2 = 39% and 23%, respectively). Hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated psychological variables more robustly predict concurrent and subsequent R /S struggles relative to spiritual variables, even though spiritual variables still predict concurrent (but not subsequent) R/S struggles. Lastly, one-way ANOVAs revealed that Wheaton undergraduates with chronic R/S struggles report significantly lower overall adjustment, lower spiritual adjustment, and higher depressive symptoms, relative to Wheaton undergraduates with no, resolved, or new R/S struggles. The findings provide further clarity on the R/S lives of emerging adults and offer insight into the R/S struggles of students at Christian colleges and universities. Implications of the study findings are discussed, along with study limitations and possible a venues of future research. Keywords: college students, religious struggles, spiritual struggles.

The Soul of the American University Revisited
Author: George M. Marsden
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190073330
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 489
Book Description
The Soul of the American University is a classic and much discussed account of the changing roles of Christianity in shaping American higher education, presented here in a newly revised edition to offer insights for a modern era. As late as the World War II era, it was not unusual even for state schools to offer chapel services or for leading universities to refer to themselves as “Christian” institutions. From the 1630s through the 1950s, when Protestantism provided an informal religious establishment, colleges were expected to offer religious and moral guidance. Following reactions in the 1960s against the WASP establishment and concerns for diversity, this specifically religious heritage quickly disappeared and various secular viewpoints predominated. In this updated edition of a landmark volume, George Marsden explores the history of the changing roles of Protestantism in relation to other cultural and intellectual factors shaping American higher education. Far from a lament for a lost golden age, Marsden offers a penetrating analysis of the changing ways in which Protestantism intersected with collegiate life, intellectual inquiry, and broader cultural developments. He tells the stories of many of the nation's pace-setting universities at defining moments in their histories. By the late nineteenth-century when modern universities emerged, debates over Darwinism and higher criticism of the Bible were reshaping conceptions of Protestantism; in the twentieth century important concerns regarding diversity and inclusion were leading toward ever-broader conceptions of Christianity; then followed attacks on the traditional WASP establishment which brought dramatic disestablishment of earlier religious privilege. By the late twentieth century, exclusive secular viewpoints had become the gold standard in higher education, while our current era is arguably “post-secular”. The Soul of the American University Revisited deftly examines American higher education as it exists in the twenty-first century.

Hard Questions, Real Answers
Author: William Lane Craig
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433516845
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 177
Book Description
Why doesn't God answer my prayers? If God is so powerful, why does evil exist? And if He is so good, why do we suffer? Nonbelievers, and even Christians, are often troubled by questions about suffering, doubt, failure, and unanswered prayer. Yet careful, compassionate answers are hard to find, in part because evangelicals have not taken the life of the mind seriously enough. The intellectual currents of our day are just too strong for simplistic responses. In Hard Questions, Real Answers, William Lane Craig doesn't offer trite phrases or pat answers-he offers honest insights gained from a life of study and ministry. Readers in the midst of doubt and confusion will find real answers to these perplexing questions and learn to stand on the only sure foundation for hope-God Himself. This expanded new edition includes chapters on abortion and homosexuality to help readers know how to think about these volatile social issues.

Spiritual Friendship
Author: Wesley Hill
Publisher: Brazos Press
ISBN: 1441227512
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 155
Book Description
Christianity Today Book Award Winner Friendship is a relationship like no other. Unlike the relationships we are born into, we choose our friends. It is also tenuous--we can end a friendship at any time. But should friendship be so free and unconstrained? Although our culture tends to pay more attention to romantic love, marriage, family, and other forms of community, friendship is a genuine love in its own right. This eloquent book reminds us that Scripture and tradition have a high view of friendship. Single Christians, particularly those who are gay and celibate, may find it is a form of love to which they are especially called. Writing with deep empathy and with fidelity to historic Christian teaching, Wesley Hill retrieves a rich understanding of friendship as a spiritual vocation and explains how the church can foster friendship as a basic component of Christian discipleship. He helps us reimagine friendship as a robust form of love that is worthy of honor and attention in communities of faith. This book sets forth a positive calling for celibate gay Christians and suggests practical ways for all Christians to cultivate stronger friendships.

Rediscover Church
Author: Collin Hansen
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433579596
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 149
Book Description
"A Christian without a church is a Christian in trouble." Since a global pandemic abruptly closed places of worship, many Christians have skipped church life, even neglecting virtual services. But this was a trend even before COVID-19. Polarizing issues, including political and racial strife, convinced some people to pull away from the church and one another. Now it's time to recommit to gathering as brothers and sisters in Christ. In Rediscover Church, Collin Hansen and Jonathan Leeman discuss why church is essential for believers and God's mission. Through biblical references and personal stories, they show readers God's true intention for corporate gathering: to spiritually strengthen members as individuals and the body of Christ. In an age of church-shopping and livestreamed services, rediscover why the future of the church relies on believers gathering regularly as the family of God. Published in partnership with the Gospel Coalition and 9Marks.
