Book Description
Excerpt from Religion and Free Will: A Contribution to the Philosophy of Values We have observed (Asceticism, ad fin.) that, when the end is strength of character, no extreme of self-torture is excessive: and from this statement we are unable to recede. It suggests an examination of the popular conception of goodness as the mean between excess and defect; and we may prepare the way for a more comprehensive treatment of the subject by inquiring how far the principle of the mean will help us to explain the particular concept of justice. Justice is a good thing. Is it a mean? and, if it is, between the excess and defect of what quality? And we must throughout bear it in mind that a mean between the excess and defect of any one quality, when represented quantitatively, is not the same tiling as the balance between two opposed qualities. A balance between two opposed quantities, however high, or however low they may be, if they are equal, is always zero. Retributive justice has been commended as a protection against the double danger of an excess or defect in the workings of revenge. The Freedom of the Will (Vol. 1-4)

The Freedom of the Will (Vol. 1-4) PDF Author: Jonathan Edwards
Publisher: Good Press
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 295

Book Description
Jonathan Edwards's 'The Freedom of the Will' (Vol. 1-4) is a comprehensive examination of the philosophical and theological concept of free will. Written in a dense and scholarly style, Edwards delves into the intricate debates on predestination, determinism, and human autonomy. His work is heavily influenced by Calvinist theology, which emphasizes God's sovereignty and human depravity, leading to a complex exploration of the tension between divine control and human choice. The meticulous arguments and careful analysis demonstrate Edwards's intellectual depth and theological acumen. The literary context of Edwards's work reflects the Enlightenment period's engagement with reason and religious inquiry, making 'The Freedom of the Will' a significant contribution to American philosophical thought. Furthermore, Edwards's rigorous writing style and logical reasoning set him apart as a key figure in early American intellectual history. Readers interested in theological debates, philosophical inquiries, and early American literature will find 'The Freedom of the Will' a rewarding and intellectually stimulating read.
