Book Description
Ascertaining the readability of technical manuals is an important step toward optimizing the effectiveness of training materials. Technical writers in the Air Force apply the Fog Count to written documents to obtain estimates of readability. However, the Fog Count requires manual computation which becomes a tedious, boring, and time-consuming task. On the other hand, the Automated Readability Index (ARI) offers a means of simplifying the collection of readability data. The study was designed to compare the inter- and intra-typist reliability of the ARI with the reliability of Fog Count, to establish an ARI baseline data pool, and to provide a set of instructions for users of the ARI.
