Abstract: The Extension system throughout the United States is a unique network of educational processes based on collective research of the land-grant university system. Extension serves as the outreach arm of the land-grant university system and brings the research and education of the university to the people of the state. County Extension administrators (commonly known as county chairs) are continuously working with a diverse and complex set of personalities and backgrounds among the staff of the local county Extension office. As the Ohio State University Extension system continues to undergo tremendous changes, the satisfaction and productivity of its clientele also faces similar challenges. County chairs must apply a continuous and dedicated effort to be emotionally, mentally and physically prepared to meet the needs and demands of staff members. Therefore, the competency and sensitivity of county chairs has become increasingly important for successful Extension leadership and work. The researcher investigated the relationship between the level of emotional intelligence of county chairs and the job satisfaction of county Extension staff. The descriptive-correlational study utilized a census of Ohio State University Extensioncounty chairs and a random sample of county Extension staff throughout the State of Ohio. Data were collected utilizing Bar-On's Emotional Intelligence Quotient instrument (county chairs) and Warner's job satisfaction instrument (county employees). The study examined the relationships between emotional intelligence of county chairs, job satisfaction of county staff and demographics of: appointment, main program area, location, length of employment with Extension, gender, race/ethnicity and previous management experience. Stepwise linear regression analysis was used to measure the proportion of variance in county staff's job satisfaction that could be explained by emotional intelligence (county chairs) and demographic characteristics. The findings suggested there is not a significant relationship between emotional intelligence of county chairs and the job satisfaction of county staff. Gender and level of highest education completed had low relationships to job satisfaction. Appointment, main program area, race/ethnicity and previous management experience did not effect the level of job satisfaction. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that the level of job satisfaction of Ohio State University Extension county staff is not influenced by the level of emotional intelligence of county chairs. Some correlations existed between job satisfaction and the selected demographic characteristics.

Emotional intelligence has been hailed as a hallmark of successful leaders since the term was popularized in the early 1990s. Shortly thereafter, executive coaching emerged as a popular and beneficial resource to support the development of managers and leaders in organizations. The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of both phenomena on leader effectiveness. This empirical study tests two research inquiries: does emotional competence predict leader effectiveness, and what impact does a quality coaching relationship have on leader effectiveness? Leader effectiveness is conceptualized as four constructs: job performance, personal vision, work engagement, and career satisfaction. Eighty-five senior executives in a North American financial services organization completed a leadership development experience which included training on emotional intelligence, multi-rater assessment, and work with an external executive coach. Survey responses were collected and triangulated with job performance data and multi-rater feedback. Results indicated that both emotional competence and a high-quality coaching relationship do indeed make a difference. Specifically, findings revealed that emotional competence directly and positively impacts performance and career satisfaction and that a quality coaching relationship leads to increased levels of work engagement, career satisfaction and expression of a personal vision. These results may be of particular benefit to scholars and practitioners interested in leader effectiveness, leader development, developmental relationships and emotions and coaching in the workplace.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership styles among Texas AgriLife Extension Service mid-managers. A web based three part instrument was administered to participants. A general questionnaire about demographics, work history and views of leadership was part one. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ form 5x) developed by Avolio and Bass examined the leader's self reported leadership style. The MLQ identifies scores for transformational, transactional and laissez-faire leadership styles and those were compared with scores on the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory Test (EQ-i). An independent samples t test was performed to assess whether the mean EI subscales scores for the high transformational leadership group differed significantly from the low transformational leadership group. Six EI constructs were statistically significant in relation to transformational leadership behavior. The six were: optimism, happiness, empathy, interpersonal relationships, self-regard, and stress tolerance. An independent samples t test was performed to assess whether the mean EI subscales scores for the high transactional leadership group differed significantly from the low transactional leadership group. Social responsibility was the one EI construct that was statistically significant in relation to transactional leadership behavior. The findings from this study indicate the leaders can develop and strengthen emotional intelligence and in doing so can more likely exhibit the use of transformational leadership behaviors. Further study would be needed to demonstrate the extent of possible application, but it is commendable that if leaders are trained in EI and those skills are fostered, they will be more likely to utilize transformational leadership further resulting in organizational effectiveness and follower satisfaction.
