A major feature of the procurement of construction works in the UK is the contractural and business relationship between clients, consultants, main contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and other stakeholders. Since the 1980s, various forms of Collaborative Working Practices (CWPs) have been advocated as substitutes to traditional arm's length contractural relationship when procuring construction works. CWPs are underpinned by Relational Contracts (RCs). RCs are informal self-enforcing agreements and are based on the proposition that economic exchanges contain significant social norms such as trust, co-operation and commitment. In such circumstances the need to maintain the relationship overrides the gains achieved by enforcing the appropriate legal contractural obligations. Yet, inter-organizational business relationships are characterized by several issues such as coordinating, controlling and legitimizing the business relationship. Hence, it is questionable as to whether RCs can be used as substitutes to formal contracting in CWPs. The aim of this study is to find out what construction organizations are doing differently in the shift towards relational contracting.
