International Handbook of Earthquake Engineering

International Handbook of Earthquake Engineering PDF Author: Mario Paz
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 146152069X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 558

Book Description
The subject of earthquake engineering has been the focus of my teaching and research for many years. Thus, when Mario Paz, the editor of this handbook, asked me to write a Foreword, I was interested and honored by his request. Worldwide, people are beginning to understand the severity of the danger to present and future generations caused by the destruction of the environment. Earthquakes pose a similar threat; thus, the proper use of methods for earthquake-resistant design and construction is vitally important for countries that are at high risk of being subjected to strong-motion earthquakes. Most seismic activity is the result of tectonic earthquakes. Tectonic earthquakes are very special events in that, although they occur frequently, their probability of becoming natural hazards for a specific urban area is very small. When a severe earthquake does occur near an urban area, however, its consequences are very large in terms of structural destruction and human suffering.

Elastic Analysis of Slab Structures

Elastic Analysis of Slab Structures PDF Author: Radu Negrutiu
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400935013
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 439

Book Description
Any practitioner who takes his profession in earnest, such that daily work is not a heavy duty but part of their life, will recognize in this book the rigorousness of the analysis and the comprehensive presentation of the problems. This professional attitude is solely able to make the research and design engineer deal with strength structures and their behaviour. Indeed, the computational means that are nowadays available permit the numerical computation of whatever problem; the pro gram libraries are extremely rich and programs themselves have developed intensively. Howeyer, though computers are available at any moment without restrictions on the frequency with which they are employed, they finally impoYerish the creative compe tency of the civil engineer. Thus, he will calculate increasingly more while devising increasingly less. He will draw less and less on the experience gained in devising and implementing bearing structures because the computational process can be repeated as often as desired over a minimum time-period by means of the available programs. \Ve note that nowadays structures are no longer investigated or economically designed to comply with the requirements of the topic of interest. :Much to the contrary, the solutions are chosen so as to comply with the capabilities of the programs. A bearing structure lives as is prescribed by its initial con structive data.

Construction Reliability

Construction Reliability PDF Author: Julien Baroth
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118601122
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 271

Book Description
This book provides answers to the following problems: how to identify the most probable critical failures; how to describe and use data-concerning materials that are either heterogeneous, time-variant, or space-variant; how to quantify the reliability and lifetime of a system; how to use feedback information to actualize reliability results; and how to optimize an inspection politic or a maintenance strategy. Numerous authors from public research centers and firms propose a synthesis of methods, both new and well-known, and offer numerous examples concerning dams, geotechnical study, and structures from nuclear and civil engineering.

Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects, Volume 4

Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects, Volume 4 PDF Author: Ammar Dhouib
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1786307782
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 436

Book Description
Geotechnical engineering is now a fundamental component of construction projects. The fourth and final volume of this book presents a range of retaining structures, alongside soil reinforcement and improvement techniques and processes. Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects 4 first presents the concept of thrust-fall, then goes on to examine the behavior of retaining structures and their design and justification methods. A variety of practical applications for retaining structures are then considered, covering gravity walls, sheet pile curtains, in advance shoring excavations and retaining diaphragm walls. The book goes on to study soil reinforcement and improvement techniques, a subject that the author has dedicated thirty-five years to researching and teaching: from reinforced earth, in situ soil nailing, micropiles, in situ soil compaction, stone columns and rigid inclusions to "soil-cement" and "lime cement" columns. This book ends with a comprehensive and practical discussion of the behavior of underground structures; covering the concepts of convergence-confinement, stress evolution and subsidence estimation. Each chapter of this fourth volume is illustrated with concrete examples and measurements of retaining structures, soil reinforcement and soil improvement from construction sites. The result is a combination of geotechnical expertise and lessons learned from experience, both of which are highly valuable in the field of applied geotechnics for construction projects.

Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects, Volume 3

Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects, Volume 3 PDF Author: Ammar Dhouib
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1786307774
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
Geotechnical engineering is now a fundamental component of construction projects. The third volume of this book is its backbone, dedicated to foundations for civil and industrial construction projects. Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects 3 first presents the basic theoretical principles and rules governing the designing and validation of foundations; shallow, semi-deep and deep, then presents real foundation projects with a detailed comparison of the approaches and methods of calculating foundations in relation to the reference systems and rules in force, closely compared to and validated by the Eurocodes. The third chapter presents examples of foundation projects, covering high-side building rafts, strip footings, piles and embankments, enriched by an unprecedented level of experience in the field of foundations for civil and industrial construction projects. It ends with examples of damage to foundations and practical appendices. Each chapter of this third volume is illustrated with photographs and measurements of construction sites and is built on both theory and experience in the field of foundations as a whole. The result is a combination of geotechnical expertise and lessons learned from experience, both of which are highly valuable in the field of applied geotechnics for construction projects.
