Regional Energy Initiatives

Regional Energy Initiatives PDF Author: Carlo Cambini
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 9780415737234
Category : POLITICAL SCIENCE
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This book focuses on the two intra-regional initiatives created for the development and integration of energy markets: the Energy Community and MedReg. The Energy Community and MedReg, apart from their common strategic role in providing a much-needed stable regulatory environment for energy markets in their respective reference countries, represent examples of a diverse development of regional energy initiatives. The former is initiated by external factors and is an example of a top-down approach, whereas the latter is a voluntary bottom-up initiative of the countries involved. The way the institutional framework is built is not without consequences on the functioning and organization of the two regional initiatives. The book assesses these different approaches and their consequences in the framework of the development of the Energy Community and MedReg, with particular reference to their impact on regional integration, energy policy and institutional change. The analysis is enriched with several case studies on the role of independent regulatory agencies, the promotion of renewable energy sources, infrastructure and interconnection development across the Mediterranean basin and the implications of exporting the EU institutional model. This book is aimed at policy makers, institutions, energy companies and academics to provide a better understanding of the economic and institutional eco-system that characterize the Mediterranean area.

Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Energy in Asia and the Pacific

Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Energy in Asia and the Pacific PDF Author: United Nations Publications
Publisher: UN
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en

The energy sector transition is the only way to address the sizeable energy deficit which impede progress in energy access in a number of member countries. It will also address gaps between current commitments under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change and lack of coherent energy strategic and policy frameworks and actions held back progress of SDG7.

Renewable Energy in the Middle East

Renewable Energy in the Middle East PDF Author: Michael Mason
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402098928
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 261

Book Description
Energy insecurity is not normally associated with the Middle East. However, away from the oil-rich Persian Gulf, the countries of the eastern Mediterranean are particularly vulnerable. Their fossil fuel endowments are low, while their fractious relationships with each other have long fostered wider political insecurities. Focusing on the Jordan Basin (Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Lebanon and Jordan), this timely volume addresses the prospects for the adoption of renewable energy in the oil-poor Middle East. Featuring regional energy experts, it offers an invaluable survey. After outlining the regional security context, this book first reviews renewable energy policy and practices in the Jordan Basin. It then considers options for greening energy use, including promising pilot projects in North Africa. The initiatives discussed encompass renewable energy finance, energy-efficient rural communities, and solar and wind energy. There is significant potential for an increase in the uptake of renewable energy technologies in the eastern Mediterranean. This window of opportunity has been created by high oil prices, energy infrastructure investment opportunities, and the UN climate change regime. In conclusion, the book considers the institutional conditions for collaborative decision-making on renewable energy. Such cooperation would deliver substantial security and human development benefits to the region, and indeed the world.

Sustainable Energy Transition In South Asia: Challenges And Opportunities PDF Author: S Narayan
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9811204330
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 209

Book Description
With South Asia's growing energy demand, governments in the region are facing the short-term pressures of facilitating energy access, while attempting to formulate long-term sustainable strategies. The first section of the book examines energy trends at the regional level, while the second section focuses on the internal and external challenges faced by India — the largest energy consumer in the region and the third-largest energy consumer in the world. The diverse perspectives in this volume provide a holistic snapshot of South Asia's ongoing low-carbon energy transition, and highlight the importance of the region working collectively to navigate the many obstacles.

Managing Regional Energy Vulnerabilities in East Asia

Managing Regional Energy Vulnerabilities in East Asia PDF Author: Daojiong Zha
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136206701
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
This book examines East Asia’s inter-state collaborative energy projects to address energy vulnerability. It focuses on projects that have demonstrated effectiveness in addressing vulnerabilities faced by the ten states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China, Japan, and South Korea in Northeast Asia. Including case studies on uncertainties in external sources of oil and gas supply, maritime piracy, continuation of energy poverty, and geographical barriers to cross-border electricity interconnection, expert contributors highlight how collaborative energy projects have been more successful than the traditional state rivalry in energy-related issues. The book develops the framework of energy vulnerability, avoiding usual securitization approaches, instead examining non-traditional security conceptualizations in studying energy policies to examine how issue-specific cooperation efforts between states arise and develop. Using East Asia as a starting point, contributors introduce a framework that advances the study of international energy cooperation. Managing Regional Energy Vulnerabilities in East Asia will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian studies, sociology, development studies, and international political economy particularly the political economy of East Asia, energy and development studies, regional and global governance of energy and the environmental economics.
